I'm currently doing more motorway miles than anything else and finding the exhaust noise a bit tiresome. I'm thinking of putting the STi backbox on instead of the Scoobysport one.

Will this be OK with the SS downpipe or should I put a standard downpipe back on as well ?

I don't know if I'm giving away any secrets here but I had a ScoobySport back box (but not downpipe) fitted and my girlfriend found it too loud.
So the guys suggested that they could make a quiter box for me at the same price.
It took a couple of weeks but H+S done a great job, well good enough to keep the missus happy.
A guy had previously had one fitted to his UK 5door and was good enough to take me out in it for a comparison before I decided to go ahead.

The only thing I noticed was that an STi comes up a bit louder than a UK Turbo, I think because it's pushing the gas harder or something.
I just thought this might be an option for you.

Err, all I have to say is that with a ScoobySport backbox and downpipe, you get a great exhaust note, you hear the turbo spinning up, and will get on your t!ts when you're doing a stint up the motorway!!

The only solution I found was to have a big stereo install!!

There's no reason that you couldn't stick a standard backbox on with the downpipe. You certainly wouldn't be making the best use of the downpipe, but it would be somewhat quieter on long runs. Note, however, that the standard box is very restrictive compared to the SS box... you *WILL* lose power and response [can be cured by judicious use of nitrous oxide... the turbo-friendly anti-lag setup]

You could, before that, try some additional carpet in the back... this has been known to help somewhat.

My solution depends on whether I'm in a rush or not. If yes, I'll stay on the motorway and wind the stereo up a bit (but 1kW continuous average power has interesting effects on my rear view mirror... it not only vibrates violently but loses its position also!). If I'm in no real rush, I'll wind the windows down and use B-roads, developping a big cheshire cat grin! With no cats it sounds pretty much like the WRC car! :-)

I bought a Remus backbox in order to keep the noise down...

But if I were in your position, I would try insulating your boot further - do you have a 3, 4 or 5 door car ?

I remember reading somewhere that the boot carpet from an Escort is almost a perfect fit (?)

Have you spoken to Pete Croney ?

the good news is if you wait for a couple of months the noise inside the car gets better. you don't hear as much. because
1:- the exhaust soot up and it becomes less noisy
2:- you, your girlfriend, your neighbours and your dog get deaf
3:- people keep telling you how good your car sound so you feel good about yourself and forget about the noise.

Fiting the standard back box on will make it quieter but you will loose some bottom end power (not top end suprisingly).

Don't get me wrong, I actually like the sound of the Scoobysport box. It's been on my car (STi4) for about a year and I have got used to the noise.

However, I have just started to do a lot of motorway miles and I find the constant drone quite tiring. Turning the music up is one option, but it's not that good for conversation !

I don't want to sell the SS backbox, I would put it back on next year when I am back to cross country driving. All I was thinking is that as I've got the STi box I could swap them over. I wondered if the combination of back pressure from the box and the free flowing downpipe would cause any problems.
