Thanks guys. Zoom would be good. I would like the idea of a compact but are they as good as the bulky boys? At the end of the day quality and ease of use are the essentials.

carl: Ive got the Dimage 7i too, and am really disappointed with it.:(:

It EATS batteries......I can only get about 10 shots from a freshly recharged 2000mAh Sony set, even on medium settings, and the prints I get are all grainy as Fek.
I'm thinking of selling it and going back to my trusty canon T90:(:

The only GOOD thing about it seems to be it's overall weight:(:

well I just got a fuji finepix s304, 3.2MP with 6 x optical zoom and err about the same digital I think (?) bought it after using a friends and was well impressed, not as compact as my old olympus but if you want decent optical zoom your gonna be looking at a chunkier camera. the s304 is down to just 229 on amazon now!

alcazar: I think you should send yours back. That is not the experience I've had with mine.

Anyway, I believe the A1 comes with a Li-ion battery pack.

I had the Canon S40 - easy to use, when you become more confident there are loads of settings you can play with ;)

I went to upgrade to the Canon G5 - but it was just too advanced for my needs.

So returned to upgraded version of old faithful - Canon S50

Over the moon with it :D

You need a better idea of your requirements & what compromises you're prepared to make. It's like asking what's the best car for £30k - you won't get a consistent answer.

In general terms the bigger cameras are better quality, but you're less likely to carry it round as it's heavier.

I'd work out what size / weight you want then go from there.

I got the olympus c50z 5megapixel, 3 x optical zoom.

It's small, metal case, easy to use.. £370

It also as a li-ion battery which is far better than using standard cells.

Do you want point'n'shoot or SLR-style camera?

Makes a lot of difference to what suits you :D
