When you upload pics to fotopic do you lose the copyright to the phots?
Just wondering as they are offering people the option to purchase pics from the site, but if you are the owner of the pics surley they cant sell them without your permission and or giving you part of the money?

i dont think taking a picture gives you the copyright on it,to get copyright on something im sure you have to go thru the courts or something like that.

Taking a picture gives you absolute copyright. However, here are issues with regard to pictures taken on private property, and with model release consent, when it comes to publication. For example, if you took a picture of Durdle Door, in Dorset, which is privately owned, you cannot publish it (for commercial gain) without the consent of the owner, but you still own the copyright of the picture.

Copyright protects, amongst other things, computer programs and databases; logos; and surface decoration. Copyright protection arises automatically, and there are no registration requirements in the UK. Where an invention, design or trade mark is also protected by copyright, we are able to advise as necessary.

Yeah, you need to be careful here. You may find, in the terms and conditions that no one can ever be arsed to read, that by using Fotopic, you agree to pass the copyright of your picture to them (I'm not saying this is so, becaus I haven't checked).

A lot of photographic competitions try to pull this scam too. Then, by using their service, or entering their compenition or whatever, they can sell, or otherwise use, your image for their commercial gain, and you don't get a bean.
