got the GEMS systems fitted to the car yesterday.
This is serious and I have not stopped smiling, the torque is brutal. Having started of with the position 'i am not looking for mega boost' ended up with 1.6bar! cant stop pressing the loud pedal but now expecting something to come flying off! fitted by Steve Simpson and a quality job. Top marks Cheers Za |
Did you go down to Town End Garage in Carnforth to get this done? I've been thinking about it too...:)
|
Excellent Alex - glad to hear your back on the grey again:D:D
|
Raymond, Steve Simpson came up to do it. He just needs a garage for about 2 hours and then a straight piece of road for an hour.
I can give you his number if you want. Cheers Za |

Mine will have to wait for a wee while due to lack of the wherewithal at the moment  but I'm definitely going to have it done. I've already spent FAR too much on my car this year :D and am going to be out of gainful employment for a month or two as well :( Problem is that I have already done all the other mods ie VF23 turbo, FMIC, headers, higher boost, induction, exhaust etc etc and am still running un unmodified ecu (MY98) so have to be very careful how I drive!!

scuse ignorance but what is GEMS i kinna figure its an ECU but what makes it so good?
|
Za,
Is it really worth the extra dosh to go for the GEMS, i'm about to buy it, so an opinion from someone who's running it would be great. Johnny. |
better off with a link;)

Doh !!
Cheers Dave. ;) I've got a choice of 3 to go for. Link. Power Engineering. Or Gems ?? Me not know what to do now. :( |
well, i've just decided to go for the link as i don't have the money for gems and scoty has the link at the mo, so i know more about it than pe. besides, i've been told by a few peeps that the controller for the link is very user friendly, so perhaps no need for further remap's in the future. i'll be doing it all meself:D;)
|
Clever bugger !! ;)
I aint got a clue...although the Gems does have Anti-lag.. :D Bye bye new turbo... |
link plus ecu has anti lag but doesn't come with connector to plug right into your car. universal fit almost.:)
|
I aint gonna use it anyways.. ;)
So what's the recomendation then ? GEMS or Link ?? |
depends totally on money m8. if your going big power, i'd go for gems if you can manage the money, but i'm going for link just now as i can then hopefully map it meself and if i decide to go for big power later on, i might change and for for motec. but for now ..... link:D
IMHO |
There's a few high power cars out there running Link, so is a capable ECU.
Gems ECU is superior in terms of processor and facilities such as launch, anti-lag but you need to ask "do i need it"? The Link has had press in the past with poor starting and lack lustre boost control, but with correct mapping this isn't an issue as Bob Rawle has proven with many of his clients cars. Certainly this applies to the '99 on cars, cause they have benefitted from development which has resulted in different chipsets made available to rectify such issues. No ECU can give more power against another one. It's just a tool to allow modifications to be used to best effect. In other words an expensive ECU badly mapped is poor value against a cheap ECU expertly mapped Alan  |
:D

Hi there, I am not sure about the difference between the GEMS and the Link. The GEMS is used by a number of GroupN rally cars and therefore has add ons link anti-lag, launch control, you can also map electronic diffs (if you have one). But as Alan says you have to ask if you really need this stuff. The antil-lag is impressive but you cant use it all the time. I also have swithable maps just incase I run out of OB or cant find optimax.
In the end of the day I chose the GEMS as my present plan is the car will be used for competition at some point in the future. However first impressions are very good. Torque is brutal and car runs very smooth. Cheers Za |
