Getting close to first tyre change and am starting to get worried about what is going to be the result of taking the STANDARD fit chap on wheel weights off. I had this problem years ago with a Renault 5 turbo raider with polished rims which were fitted with these as well and when they were removed the laquer was all split and moisture had got underneath and started corroding the alloy. Why the hell do manufacturers fit these to alloys and does anyone know if I have any comeback with Subaru regarding damage to rims?

Pretty sure you'll have no comeback with Subaru, it's common practice to fit weights on the outside, crazy, yes, but not uncommon.!
