As above realy, is the Lucas Girling stuff from my local factors ok? Its dot 4 or 5, Or, do i need somthing more exotic for AP brakes? Dont want to bugger up any seals:eek:
for ap brakes u need dot 5.1.
Thanks for that Andy, i reckon the Lucas Girling dot 5.1 will be ok then??
You don't need to use anything in particular (except to avoid using the Dot 5 silicon fluids). Dot 4 will be OK with AP seals as will Dot 5.1. But Dot 5.1 is a better fluid than dot 4 so if you have gone to the expense of decent brakes it would be a bit daft to use cheapo brake fluid.
not strictly true, Dot5.1 is commonly mis-sold/ supplied as a "performance" fluid and does not apply across all makes!!!........to be exact SOME Dot5.1 fluids are better than SOME dot4's, however, a lot of "race" fluid are ONLY dot4 (and sometimes not approved at all!!!) and yet wil outperform the 5.1's......
the "dot" rating is a measure more of how hydroscopic (how well it repels mosture) the fluid is, this is why certain "racing" fluids are not "dot" rated (and not really suitable for a daily driver) as the attract moisture too readily......the temperature ability of th fluid is more pertinent and should be stated on the tin!! hope this helps alyn - asperformance.com p.s. the quote is correct about most fluid's being suitable..... |
Thanks very much for the replys chaps, very helpfull!
