iPaq or XDA with TomTom Navigator 2

Will do the job admirably. You won't (currently) do Postcode to Postcode but it does do Number in Street to Number in Street, so just as good. 99.5% accuracy. Lady or bloke talks to you in a number of languages.

You can take it out of the car with you. You can use your PDA for other things & in the case of an XDA as a phone or for surfing the internet. Take it from car to car.

Coolest thing is Bluetooth iPaq with a Bluetooth GPS receiver - no wires :D (Doesn't currently work with XDA 2 but they're working on a fix)

RRH 12 November 2003 07:38 PM

I've got TomTom on my HP Jornada, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Having said that, it does appear to have a 'malicious' mode if you ignore it. mine sent me on to a playing field the other day!

excellent system though, and can be bought pretty cheap on ebay.

Anything that works with a P800 Sony Ericson yet? It's Symbian OS after all.

druddle 12 November 2003 08:30 PM

I use an iPaq, TomTom2 and Bluetooth GPS receiver and its excellent. Very accurate, and i can also use it for my email....

cool- i'll sell my palm and get the ipaq with blue teeth!

Huxley 12 November 2003 10:28 PM

I'll agree with RRH I have the same setup as well

I have had the same problem when you ignore her, typical female=Evil :D:rolleyes::p

and can be bought pretty cheap on ebay.
The only thing with Ebay is they normally send out the kit with a different GPS head which is not the TomTom Navigator kit one and the one in the kit is not as good as the propper one make sure if you can, get the TomTom one it's a better GPS head, I found out the hard way

And you can have the speed camera software on TomTom as well

and you can use a Road Angel as the GPS unit (with a Holux cable) so a cheap iPaq + TT would work very nicely.

Dazza01 13 November 2003 03:47 AM

i bought one from ebay couple months ago, a IPAQ 3760, TOMTOM 2, GPS, CF JACKET + 128 MB FLASH CARD, all i can say is its a bit of very impressive kit, works perfectly for me, chuffed to bits with mine, although i hardly use it..lol

paid £360 for it and will prob be putting it back on ebay before the years out

Bajie 13 November 2003 08:14 AM

Can't you get a GPS convertor ... thingy to use on your palm?

PalmOS GPS

Last months PDA Essentials magazine had a website advertised. I'll hunt it down and put here later this evening.
IIRC you made your route and downloaded to the palm. There are thousands of maps on-line which you can use.
Some of the user reviews were not too positive while others really did swear by it

Dazza01 13 November 2003 12:59 PM

Apples,
wanna sell it then ? can u mail me some pic pls and detils of it

gregh 13 November 2003 01:42 PM

yes you can do sat nav on the P800, check this website for a review and tons of info on what you can do with PDAs and GPS

Dunno exactly what you're after but

TomTom

Brodit Holders for specific devices.

Advansys for GPS receivers (including Bluetooth) & iPaqs or XDAs.

TTN2 is about £115, Holder about £40 (2 parts), Haicom GPS receiver (wires) £80 or Bluetooth GPS receiver £230 (?)

On top of the cost of the PDA.

Just remember that if you went for an XDA 2, it doesn't currently support BT GPS devices :( But they're working on an upgrade :)

TopBanana 13 November 2003 01:47 PM

The surest and quickest way to get something working is to order a hardware / software bundle from www.tomtom.com

apples24 13 November 2003 02:11 PM

well i was gonna stick it back on ebay and hope to get me dosh back as they fetch good wonga on there, mine is ready to go just switch it on and plug in cigerrete lighter.

what about this
http://www.aldi.co.uk/specials_01_11/offers_nav.htm

I saw it advertised in the Top Gear magazine. I have no idea if its good or rubbish. It just looks cheap at £349 for something brand new with 3 years warranty

Bravo2zero_sps 13 November 2003 02:43 PM

My setup

Dell Axim £150
Haicom compact Flash GPS unit £80
TomTom Navigator 2 software at say £110 depending where u get it from.

Plus a ciggie lighter charger for £8 and a dash mount for £30.

Add on the pocketgps speed camera map and off you go :D

A very cheap way of doing it and I am very happy with it :D

what would scooby do 14 November 2003 08:27 AM

I've got an IPAQ with Navman - works just fine - only let me down once - looking for a Shell garage in Basildon.. I guess it couldn't find one so it sent me to Shelly Avenue - ropey area an-all..
:D

Bravo2zero_sps 14 November 2003 09:19 AM

Not for the proper GPS system? Anyway what the point of arguing over that, everyone has to pay the same for that software, its the hardware I got that I thought was a bargain compared to what it would have cost with an Ipaq and Navman stuff.

My pda, gps unit and accessories cost less than just a basic Ipaq on its own. Think they are way over priced and yes I do know what they are like because I have supported the bl00dy things for the last couple of years. Just don't understand why Ipaqs are so popular above all the other competition when they cost so much more.

You can get TomTom for free if you know the right people. <cough>

apples24 14 November 2003 04:15 PM

Tiggs 11 December 2003 07:01 PM

My current car has a built in satnav unit, my new car wont. I neeeeeed sat nav as its nearly as cool as sky+ so do i get a new head unit thingy with a nav unit built in or do i sell my palm and get an ipaq or similar and run something on that?

the cool things about the BMW version is the big screen and the lady telling you what to do- i assume a PDA version isnt gonna compete? (having said that will an aftermarket head unit version compete with the beemer set up anyway?)

any help?

T
