First of all, are you sure there's no adware/spyware or viruses sucking up a large amount of CPU time?
Nex, bin off Windows ME and replace it with XP. Make sure you are running the latest drivers from nVidia (check the website, don't trust the CD that came with it to be recent). After that, upgrade the RAM. I usually use Crucial. Be careful to pick the correct RAM; as your PC is a Packard Bell (purchased from PC World?) and is 2Ghz, there's a possibility it may use regular PC100 or PC133 rather than DDR PC2100 or PC2700. Shout back if you've any Q's! |
I'd definitely get more RAM but the problem is that if you've not got DDR then i doubt putting in another 256mb of PC133 or like will make any difference. The problem with buying a mainstream PC like Packard Bell is that the components they use tend to be quite cheap and not really aimed at the high end gaming market. I'd doubt that the motherboard supplied is any good at all. Thus restricting your ability to upgrade any components. Also crap motherboards (being the central hub of a PC) can and will be your main bottleneck (even if you have a quick Graphics card.....).
If you know a bit about PC's I'd strongly suggest replacing the MOBO and get yourself some decent DDR RAM - PC2700 would be plenty but PC3200 even better. It wont cost you that much to do either (about £200)- you could then really benefit from that pretty decent graphics card. Marc |
that makes sense,
I think i will build my own. I will upgrade to xp and see how it goes. |
