I have a STI V Type R. Being human, I have got used to the acceleration and plan to increase boost.

Can I do this with a manual tap without any other mods? Any of you guys have done so and can I get some advise? A mechanic told me this will damage the engine as the fuel management is not uprated. The mechanic suggests that the only good way of getting more boost is changing the ECU mapping.

Comments and experiences please!

The guy knows what he is talking about. It is not safe to increase boost on these cars without at least having the fueling checked out to make sure it has not become too lean.
A garage with the "Select Monitor" and a rolling road can do this for you.

With the problems involved with STi V's under certain condions, I'd say if you do that, it's only a matter of time before something goes bang.
It seems quattro had a good improvement by fitting some HKS kit. But your obviously gonna have to pay for that!
Still, cheaper than a blown engine.

MY93 WRX had a "chip"? fitted recently and no ECU re-map.The car runs great, no "pinking", no problems whatsoever.
I have been told that on my model there is a sufficient fuel/mixture increase capability from the standard ECU to compensate for the increase in boost pressure(max 18 p.s.i).
Any reason to doubt this ?

Hi there,

Most WRX's do run slightly rich (but they do vary from car to car). Its reasonably safe (within reason) to up the boost without altering the fuelling/timing (using a bleed valve and FCD...or Superchip AVS).

Personally - I would never do that. It is the crudest way of tunning a car and there are far better ways.

If you are going to just reboost your car, spend a little of money and fit an electronic boost controller.

The only way to be sure its running safely is to put it on a rolling road and check the emmisions.
