Thinking of getting one for the bedroom, are they any good?

Cheers

Same place meself. They are well too pricy for a 17" widescreen at the mo. Gonna get a 24" CRT Samsung for £215 to tide me over till they start getting sensible - if you can get a 15" LCD for yer computer for £199 etc...

PG 09 November 2003 08:08 PM

watch out if you are viewing from different angles ie. lying on the bed, sitting in a chair and generaly wandering around the room.
Can often not be seen from some angles

Ru$$Rip 09 November 2003 10:18 PM

LCD's show the imperfection sof analogue TVs amazingly well. I wouldnt recommend that you get one for the bedroom unless you have a digital source for the signal. With the correct signal they look awesome and knock the spots of old bulky CRTV's. Prices are falling rapidly though.........

MadGrip 09 November 2003 10:22 PM

I have a 44" RPTV with digital input for pic and sound (+digital 5.1 output) and I'd say its beats CRT's everytime

They're exspensive for the size and blacks aren't as good as on crts. If it's going to be at least at the other end of the bed from you, the picture should seeem ok. I've seen a few in the shops with poor pictures, but I normally put that down to the shops aerial. They do save space and are getting better all the time :) I'm thinking of getting one myself, when prices are abit better.

MattN 09 November 2003 11:19 PM

mine works fine and was under 400 quid.

How do you get digital source tho?

Jamesemt 10 November 2003 03:30 AM

Madgrip - lol I've got a 42'' Tosh which is a bit crap compared to my mates Sony...

paulr 10 November 2003 06:53 AM

I looked into it recently, but decided to wait.

Diesel 10 November 2003 11:20 AM

James - have you set it up properly? Convergence etc - my 42" Tosh loses convergence every time the dog bangs into it - the bugger even cocked his leg on it last night as there was an objectionable kangaroo on screen :o I was gobsmacked as he is SO clean in the house!!!

Anyway, can you explain WHY your mates’ Sony is better, cos frankly mate I think you are talking Tosh ;) It’s a bit like saying BMW’s are better than Subaru’s – that too is plainly Tosh!

Luke 10 November 2003 11:23 AM

Sony dont make em like they use to...

paulr 07 January 2004 02:54 PM

Diesel..........whats the current situation?
Bought anything yet?

Diesel 07 January 2004 03:17 PM

Yes - bought that £215 Samsung. Was very pleased with it too – ‘panorama’ scan was very good for making 4:3 viewable in 16:9 and significantly cleverer than my big Tosh..

I say 'was' as it broke before Xmas and the engineer was meant to come today but his car broke down so I missed a morning off work for nothing and still have no telly :( It does seem a good telly (and I AM fussy) so it’s just bad luck I guess. What I said about Sony still stands too btw – saw several bad ones in mates’ houses over Xmas…

I’m having a run of bad luck actually as the £2500 grade one monitor here at work broke today too (someone tell me again that an LCD screen is better than a CRT ; I had such a good laugh in this forum last time :))

paulr 07 January 2004 03:39 PM

Okay.
The reason i ask is yesterday i bought a Phillips 24 inch W/S for my bedroom but took it back today.Just way too bulky.

Back to the old 15in portable then:( until LCD tv's come down in price.

corradoboy 07 January 2004 04:17 PM

Worth a look at the price !

WRX_BLUES 07 January 2004 04:27 PM

I'd hang on for a bit for LCD TVs. Within the next two years I think you'll find that

1) The prices will drop
2) LCD technology is dramatically evolving (inside info)
3) Bigger LCD screens will emerge for the same price as current
4) Plasma screens will fade into darkness

chiark 07 January 2004 04:45 PM

They've still got a way to go with the contrast imho. I've come to the conclusion that I just don't like plasma pictures at all :( and am hoping that LCD will be the saviour!

Diesel 07 January 2004 06:23 PM

Yep Paul - agree mine is a bit bulky, but its over a grand cheaper than a smaller widescreen TFT. I'll put up with it for now as LCD's are silly premiums (esp when you look at 4:3 computer TFT mon's).

I'd like to say one last time that the best pictures at the moment (and certainly on anything under £5k) remains on CRT's - that archaic old hot vacuum valve affair :)

paulr 07 January 2004 06:53 PM

There must be high mark ups on them cos Currys/Dixons seem to be really pushing them.

jaf01uk 07 January 2004 07:22 PM

And I have yet to see one set up properly or speak to any of the assistants who can tell you the first thing about them!! One guy in Comet actually told me NOT to buy a £3000 plasma cos it'll only last 2 years!! Took his advice and didn't, but not for the longevity issue!

Diesel 08 January 2004 06:37 PM

Agree!!!! I peeked 'round the back of one multi thousand pound display in Comet the other day cos the picture was BAD - it was fed by RF...
