I have recently purchased a new MY99 UK spec. Impreza turbo. After 2500 miles the gearbox is still very notchy and difficult to engage most of the gears unless the clutch is pushed to the floor. Is this a common occurance and will it get better with use or is a trip to the dealer in order???

It looks like you've already worked out the cause. By pressing the clutch pedal, the gears are easier to engage. Strangely, this problem afflicts most cars and isn't confined to the Impreza.

Someone once said "If you ask a question well enough it will answer itself".. heh heh

On a serious note it does get better with mileage. Mine was a bugger to start with, but after 10000 miles it's better. Reverse is still a pain though.

2 comedians on one topic, I should be selling tickets!

I have read the owners manual and realised that the clutch pedal was probably there in order to allow you to change gear but on other cars I have driven I have never had to push the pedal to the floor so often.

Perhaps my clutch needs adjusting. I presume they are self adjusting but is there any adjustment the dealer can make to 'give it a bit of helping hand'???

My MY99 is also notchy going into 1st either at standstill or low speed and also from 1st to 2nd. Rest of gears are fine. Gearbox doesn`t crunch going into these gears so am not unduly worried. Perhaps notchiness is due to shortened throw of gearlever for MY99 over previous models?

My MY99 is still a bit notchy going 2nd to 3rd after 4200 miles. I think the clutch is adjusted at the 7500 mile service.

It's getting better though along with everything else.

Same as my MY99 2nd to 3rd is notchy and a bit difficult to engage after 5k miles, will speak to dealer at 7.5k service.
