I would expect but you'll have to open it to see that there is a chip in the spare slot and one of the resistors cut..

That is Mines who I believe are a Jap tuner who provide plug in chips.. problem is Jap fuel is 100ron.. so it may have made it run lean on UK fuel.. possibly causing the bang..

See www.scoobyECU.co.uk and there should be a picture in the fitting instructions of the ECU and if you take the over off you should be able to match up. You should be able to remove the chip although some places solder them in..
So might end up having to get a new ECU anyway.

Probably www.gradea-subaru.co.uk being the cheapest place for one..

I have heard of at least 2 Mines ECU cars going bang in the UK. This makes 3.

If it's anything like any of the other Jap Mapped ECU's I've seen then it will have shed loads of ignition advance and boosting to around 16psi, speed limit set to over 200mph and not safety fuel-cut.

The sort of advance I have seen is not good on UK fuel. Also the W6 map is very poor compared to the later maps. If they have just fiddle with the W6 base map then that's not a good starting point.

There is probably and extra chip in the bottom right hand corner (connector at the top), this can be fitted with another chip more suitable for UK fuel running 15.5psi (standard is 11.47psi), But only if the current chip is fitted in a socket and not soldered direct to the board (their a bitch to get out if soldered).

There is also a link that would of been cut/removed labelled 'J1' on the board. If you fit a piece of wire accross this position it will run the standard map which is on the main ECU board.

Have a look at my add in ScoobyShop for ScoobyECU / ScubaChip<96'

P.S I'm only down the A21 from u guy's

This is out of a 1993 WRX Scooby we have at work with a blown engine. Is this a Special ECU or what. Could it of been the Cause to the Engine Boom!!!!

Its a fotopic one ;)

Oh is it, i'll contact those people then, they might know bit more about it ;)

Mortywrx 06 November 2003 08:25 PM

Its a Mines ECU, not sure its a ecu chip in the standard metal box or a full ecu. There is a few ppl on here who could poss give you a better Idea.

Well all i can see are the fotopic messages.

pugoetru 06 November 2003 09:51 PM

deffo a photopic might be a version 2:D

W6 is a standard ECU for a 93 wrx, assume the mines plaque would mean that its been remapped as a mines ecu, i.e the internal board would either be mines, or there would be an additional chip in it with a custom map.

MINES do/did after market mapping - chips and/or boards for early Scoobies, I guess this has one in.

As they ( the mines chips )increase boost, change fueling, ignition timing etc. it might just have somethingto do with the Boom if a jap map ?

Mines = Remapped for more power, so dangerous on anything but 100RON IMHO.

Dunno if they can be remapped for UK fuel or not, although I have heard someone on here say it can be done (can't remember the details of that conversation tho, sorry).

Jap Imports 07 November 2003 09:59 AM

Thanks for the reply's

Do you think we should leave this off the car as it could blow the engine again.

Rich Tee 07 November 2003 11:01 AM

Simple answer would be yes, you can get hold of a second hand W6 ECU for about 50-100, unless you get it on a RR with the ECU on to check fueling etc

Either remap it to UK fuel, or bin it and put a standard one in which you should also get remapped... Otherwise the same is likely to happen again, as it is likely to have been mapped quite aggressively with 100RON fuel. Needs to be safer than that for UK fuel :).
