Here is the scoop, £1103 including VAT.

18 hours Labour !!!!
Timing Belt (80-90)
Plugs (58)
Oil & Filter
Air Filter

Seems high to me given some of the other input. I've also been told that there are 3 or 4 exhaust leaks that need fixed due to leaking gaskets. I'm getting the feeling that I'm being ripped off. Someone make me feel better.

PS Anyone got a list of engine diagnostic codes for a 94 Sti as the Warning light show up intermittently and they say the codes don't match up to the list they have.

18hrs IS a rip off.Told you,both GGR,and PE,quoted 4hrs for a clutch.

For that money,you could come down south,get your clutch done,have a weekend away,and still have some change !!!!

I guess it might be difficult to get down south with a knackered clutch!

Is there any way for Cammy to get a partial refund on this?

If he can get some labour quotes from other garages which are much less than 18hrs - would this not show that he was vastly overcharged?

I think we need to know who this garage is - at the very least we can make sure no one else is ripped off.

The hours include the other items which if you look at approx £500 for the clutch plus as previously quoted £200(inc VAT) for fitting that leaves £400 for Timing belt, oil/Air filter which is about 150-200 over the odds. They also picked up the car(obviously) and will return it tonight, so still high but not much option given that Subaru won't look at it. I'll get the bill tonight and post the details later on when I get home.

The other thing to think about is not only the hours but also the rate per hour I suppose.

The clutch has just started slipping on my
STI 2, Goodes quoted 5 hours labour at £45+vat an hour. Is there any body else worth looking at? I have looked at Power Engineering and labour is cheaper. Also what clutches are the best to go for?
R19KET, i saw your car at P.E last week was having a clutch fitted, how are you getting on? And what did you have fitted?
And finally does anyone know if these clutches that have an standard STI cover & bearing with an A.P plate are any good? I hear you get a bit of judder,is this right??

James,

I spent quite a bit of time looking into replacement clutches,and decided that the STi branded uprated clutch was probably my best bet.

There are two sizes of clutch for the scooby.The uk car uses a 225mm dia',and the STi's use a 230mm(my98 don't know about other years).
AP do a 225mm plate,but not a 230mm,so that ruled them out for me.
STi do a matched plate and cover,+ PE had one in stock.
As for how I'm getting on,I'll have to let you know.PE found quite a bit more damage to my car(Goodwood trip,long story)so it went straight off to the repairers.

STi clutch kit(uprated) £450 + vat'
Labour £168 + Vat'
OUCH !!!!!!

AP clutches tend to be of the 'paddle' type.
They're designed for racing,so using one in traffic is a bit of a nightmare,very much on,or off.
GGR have a few different types of clutch,it would be worth talking to them,they recommended the STi upgrade for mine.

It gets worse guys, got the car back last night then took it out and all seemed fine, just before putting it in the garage later I thought I'd have another quick run around, gear changing very notchy and then loads of noise from internals(**** !!!) managed to limp home but strong burning smell although it felt OK and the gears were then running OK but did sound noisy. I'll get on the blower to him again today to take it back. I'm now wishing I'd kept my GTi. I'm even thinking of trying to get it sorted and just getting rid as I cannot afford to keep shelving out like this......Any input would be v.much appreciated.
