i'd say the graphics card you have there will NOT be able to play HL2 at any decent resolution or speed....

until it finally arrives, most people are edging towards radeons as the card of choice for hl2... to a 9700pro, 9800..... a 9600xt should do it as they're bundling the game with it....

Morning people, my pc at home is well and truely dead. I dont have the luxury before christmas to buy a pc for £2000. So a company down the road to me has quoted this spec pc, I would just like some expert opinions on value for money and if this pc will run all the new funky games,

AMD Athlon XP 2800+
333mhz

512mb pc2700 ddr333 branded memory

ASRock K7s8x rev 3.0 atx motherboard

geforce fx5200 128mb ddr 8 svga card

54 x cd rom drive.

this is what the guy quoted me, will be re-using my formated hard drive with 60gig.

all this was £345 inc vat, what do you reckon? will it have enough power to run the new half life 2 properly?

That graphics card is poor! The machine will run but not in the graphic settings that you would want it to run in.

thanks for the info, think it will probably benefit me more to hang on for a while and buy an all singing and dancing machine from alienwares or overclockers

Jye 06 November 2003 09:35 AM

Whats properly?

It will run it well at 1024 X 768 IMO but I doubt 'any' current off the shelf system will run it fast and smooth with all the eyecandy on at 1600 X 1200, 16 AF and 8X AA etc. Same goes for Doom III.

BTW look into building your own machine, it has many benefits...

You learn more
You pick quality components
It's always upgradable
You can build/pay over time
and you always know exactly which bits need upgrading...

fitzscoob 06 November 2003 09:39 AM

well my current machine is so slow that it refuses to run counterstrike without the graphics getting all juddery.

By properly i mean, run the game, fast, smooth, at a decent res.

Ask that question next april when half life 2 actually gets released.

Here's a rundown on graphics cards...

THE GeFORCE "TYPE-R"
Has a high pitched whining noise from the cooling fan. Avoid.

THE RADEON "SUBARU"
Its lightening fast, but has none of the feature set to make it look the best. Easy to mod.

THE ALL-IN-WONDER "E46 M3"
Costs a packet, has lots of the latest features and goes fast. Will compell you to inform others of its superior features at the next "counterstrike get-together"

Hope that clears it up for you.

u need a ati 9800

ScoobyDoo69 06 November 2003 08:20 PM

i'd say get a Radeon 9800np, and overclock it to pro standards, radeons seem to have a massive advantage over the geforces for HL2 at the moment.

Go on then - how do you overclock a 9800 pro to "professional standards"????

He says - just having installed one yesterday

mod details here

JZA He said "overclock a Radeon NP" - eg. Non-Pro

Would be interested to know what make of Radeon 9800 it is and what type of RAM it uses. You did say it was a non-pro didn't you ?
