1 bar = 14.504 psig, so to convert Bar to psig multiply bar by 14.504 and this will give you values in psig ;)

It may be a stupid Q 2 many, but how do you go about reading a boost gauge.(never had one before now) mines in BAR instead of PSI,so is it basicly, when i slam my right foot down (to the floor)do i read whatever the meters needle point reaches??

Jolly Green Monster 05 November 2003 01:00 PM

Yes..

Boost will build to full boost above 3000rpm roughly depending on the car and tail off slightly towards the redline..

must be my math ability delboy, but i can't manage to work that one out, the needle goes to about 1.7 BAR?

Simonz, I hope that you are reading your gauge wrong coz that equates to 24.6psi  check your gauge it might be one that has a dual reading on it e.g. bar & psi so your might be actually reading 17psi. It not get your car to a tuner right away and take it easy unless you have some serious work already done under that bonnet it'll go bang in a big way.

just been out to the gauge and had another look, its got a green bit on the left that says 1.0 ...then u've got the next colour which is yellow and in threr it has 0.5 and 1.0 then the next is red and thats got the 1.5 and 2.0 max!at the minute with the engine off it reads 0.5 in the yellow, .....when i start the car it will sit between the green colour and the yellow,...and when i stick my foot down it will shoot roud as far as 1.7 in the red!(note; the needle never goes into the green area at all) the car runs fine tho and all boost noises sound smooth and sweet,...so am i still readin it wrong or.........

Simonz 06 November 2003 10:56 AM

it only says BAR on it,....no psi and all i've got as far as i know is de-cat full sys s/s zorst ..induction kit and dump valve. so it should be around 13 psi may be?....its a 94 wrx!

HELP?

Unless you driving under load you should not get any positive boost, but sounds like your meter is starting in the wrong place anyway, In fact on idle your engine will be sucking air rather than getting positive boost and should give a negative figure,Anway if we are to belive the gauge and you start at .5 bar and go to 1.7 that gives you 1.2bar boost equating to 17.4PSI not sure on you model year so don;t know if this is to be expect, it's more that i get standard on My01 (15 ish PSI ) as indicated on defi.anyway here's a table showing pressures
Bar millibar kPa psi kg/cm.sq
0.1 100 10 1.45 0.102
0.2 200 20 2.9 0.204
0.3 300 30 4.35 0.306
0.4 400 40 5.8 0.408
0.5 500 50 7.25 0.51
0.6 600 60 8.7 0.612
0.7 700 70 10.15 0.714
0.8 800 80 11.6 0.816
0.9 900 90 13.05 0.918
1 1000 100 14.5 1.02
1.1 1100 110 15.95 1.122
1.2 1200 120 17.4 1.224
1.3 1300 130 18.85 1.326
1.4 1400 140 20.3 1.428

Sorry just noticed model. seems high without dawes, map suggest borrowing another gauge on a flying hose and trailing it into cabin to test..like they do on rolling roads. You should be able to pick up another cheap boost gauge on e-bay

Simonz 06 November 2003 11:32 AM

cheers guys,...I is hoping its knackard!

Simonz 06 November 2003 08:44 PM

do you test the boost when your car is stood still?,.........caus when i give it sum revs when stationary it wont go no more than just over the 1.0.but when moving thats when it goes in to the red and reads the 1.6-1.7

Jolly Green Monster 06 November 2003 09:02 PM

When engine is off it should read 0 bar.. if not then the gauge is broken.. or taken the pick up from the wrong place but unlikely if it is moving and seeing boost.. so must be the gauge.

JGM :)
