My new Scoob was fitted with Cusco coilovers by a previous owner. I've no idea what springs are on it, but it seems a bit hard and underdamped for UK quality roads, so I'm planning on taking the springs down a notch - probably to 275/225lbs at first but I'll experiment.
To save me the hassle of measuring the springs, does anyone have the inside diameter and free length measurements available? Failing that, does anyone know who the UK distributor is? I think they're either 02s or 02-Rs. Cheers |
what spring rating are they @ present?
|
I *believe* they're 440 and 275 if they are the standard springs. It certainly feels about that hard - especially at the front.
|
Noone know?
Oh well, I guess I'll have to get the airtools out :( |
Can't remember inside diameter for the Cusco. Think it's 65mm.
If it helps it's different to the spring diameter of Leda's which i think are 2 1/4" or 60mm. Spring free length on mine are 8" front and rear. Alan  |
Cheers buddy that helps a lot! I'd assumed they were 2.25" diameter.
|
Took a front and rear strut off last night to get the measurements, thought I'd post here in case anyone has the same question as me and does a search...
They are 65mm internal diameter. The platforms will take up to a 9" spring. The dampers are very plush 40mm units which obvously cost the original buyer a bob (yen?) or two! Mine were rock-hard 6" springs, there was NO DROOP whatsoever - hardly surprising that it was so skittish. There were no markings on the springs (except a daub of orange paint) but having taking measurements, the calculated rates were 420lb and 380lb. I've ordered a set of 250/200lb spring 9" springs, so we'll see how they work - I don't want it any harder than it needs to be. I'll report back once they're fitted. |
where did you get the new springs from and how much where they? i'm thinking of doing the same to my cusco coilovers at the moment.
cheers. |
I ordered the springs from Faulkner's through Demon Tweaks. They were about £25+VAT per corner I think. I'll post back here to let you know how well they work with the dampers.
Do your dampers have adjusters at the bottom with the numbers 1 to 4 on each corner? Are there only 4 settings or are they quarter of a turn markers? They seem to just spin and spin as far as I can tell. |
Excited to see a package waiting for me at home labeled 'suspension springs'. Disappointed to find only two springs inside :(
|
mine are only height adjustable. by the way co-ord sport are now the offical cusco supplier for the uk.
|
Ive just bought a scooby with the cusco coilovers fitted and also find it very hard on the uks roads.
Keep me informed how you get on. Cheers Adrian |

them spring ratings are what i have selected to fit on my JIC coilovers
let me know how it rides with the new springs fitted as mine are far to hard as well  |
I now have the springs at home. Doing the work Monday night, along with the fitment of solid rear drop-links and an 'anti-lift' kit (both Whiteline).
I'll post a bit up about the ride quality on Tuesday, but won't be in a position to report on the handling I have the geometry and damping set up properly. |
i have just orderd the 250 fronts, i should have them 2morow
i will fit them 2morow and report back, still havnet orderd the rears yet (i need the fronts desperatly as one of mine has snapped ) they must be far to hard for the uk :( |
250 fronts are spot on
the front of my car now feels perfect i will have to get sum rears now ;) its aperntly a touch stiffer then a sti6 so its pretty good as a allround uk package :D |
you have email.
my ride is far to stiff................ |
Sticky can you tell me what you bought? I'm still getting used to the Ledas but may need to put less extreme springs on the STI 5 also
, Cheers cal [Edited by currymonster - 11/23/2003 1:16:24 AM] |
i registerd with scoobynet with a old email address i use for message boards, to prevent spam and genral porn/crap getting to my real address
ill try and hunt your mail down lol the springs i bought were Faulkner from demon tweeks, just like the man above me :D £58 deliverd next day + saturday morning for 2 springs of my choice |
Hi guys,
Ive emailed a few people from the two cusco threads on scoobynet and have had soem good response, cheers guys. Just to confirm, what is the standard sti6, any type r spring rates front and rear. I want some slightly stiffer than factory standard, so was thinking off 250/200 like Micky. Adrian |
STi6 standard spring rates are 237 and 195 lbs / inch. That's the stiffest of any factory Scooby
|
and sum people complain that there a bit to stiff for uk roads
so that sounded about perfect as a base for my suspension :D 200 rears are as good as considering you cant get the exact figure, i wish i wasnt so skint so that i could get the rears bought, i was really hateing the way my car drove with them fronts fitted i could sqush the 250 fronts a bit by hand, the ones i took of were like fooken tubes of steel |
im going to ring Demon Tweeks today and try and get some asap as i have a geometry set up booked for friday.
|
decided to wait and see what rich at powerstation thinks on the coilovers, ive set them at setting one which i hope is the softest.
I have also took some pictures of both front and rear struts, it seems that the springs are very short and the height adjuster is wound up very close to the top of the strut. |
Last night I fitted the new springs, anti-lift kit and solid rear drop links. I haven't cornerweighted it yet or reset the geometry, but I can say that;
1) The ride is obviously much better, although still very firm 2) The handling is much more predictable 3) 250/200 is a good balance front-to-rear 4) Thanks the the rear drop links, the turn-in is transformed. It's a go-kart! 5) That rear bolt on the lower control arm is a b1tch :) I may experiment with spring rates a bit further, as I tend to prefer the softest rates I can get away with without allowing excessive pitch or roll. |
cashy: do you coilovers have 1-4 on the bottom, and spin freely? Mine do and I find it a bit confusing. Are there only 4 possible settings?
|
not that i can see but i do have pics of the struts and shocks front and rear but not sure how to post on here.
|
Cool looks like 250 front and 200 rear for me too , Got 450 and 225 at mom, is bloody rock hard!
Cal |
Can you let me know what length springs you order for front and rear, i rank Demon T and they needed to know exactly. 250 front and 200 rear, internal diamter 65 mm but i need length of springs.
Cheers |
