Just come back from 2 weeks blast around Europe.

On a twisty Pyrenees mountain road between Spain and France, my power steering fluid boiled, burst a pipe, sprayed onto exhaust manifold and caught fire. Luckily, had a fire extinguisher and killed the flames before any major damage was done. Cleaned it all up and, fixed the pipe, topped up with fluid, no problem.

Or so I thought till I was on my second lap of the Nurburgring a week later, braking from 100mph down to a fast left hander when the steering locks in the straight ahead position. Major brown trousers time!! My only thought was to scrub off enough speed as possible before I hit the barrier. About a second later (seemed like about 5) the steering freed up enough and I managed to haul the car around the corner.

The power steering pump had failed, probably due to problem I'd had earlier in the week.

Anyone else had problem with boiling fluids?? (ooer!)

For the rest of the trip I took off the bonnet grilles, front grille and the number plate to get as much air flow through the engine bay as possible.

Steve (now with new underwear...)
