might be tyre rubbing on inner guard

jjk 30 May 2001 11:36 AM

Think this might have been raised before but would like to see if anyone has changed any components to rectify:
The sounds can be made with 2+ people in the car (Easier with more people
in). It does it on mine (RB5 17 " wheels and also on my mates MY99 with 16" wheels). I don't think that it is a tyre rubbing against the strut because I have not seen any
evidence of tyre wear on any of the tyres that I have had over the last year. Also I have made it make the sound with the car parked, opening the boot and bouncing the rear up and down by pressing on the boot rim.
Therefore, it must be spring / bush related????
Dealer has check my mates suspension etc and cannot see anything worng.
Scooby 'feature'?
All help appreciated...

is it at the front or the back ?

do you get it if you turn the steering to full lock when stationary ?

it could be strut top mounts, bearing.

is it at low speeds, high speeds, bumpy roads ?

need more info http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Hi Sam
Deffo from the back; Seems strange why we both have the same prob.
High speed, bumpy roads.
Will try the steering lock one...

Cheers for all help

Reply from my mate same prob:

As I have tested it static, I am sure that it is not tyre rub. I
performed the static test with the steering wheel in its centre position (I.e. not turning) and the noise was coming from the back - however, when driving I get the impression it may be coming from the front as well - but possibly only on the left side of the car. When going round roundabouts it is the left side of the suspension that is being compressed when the noise happens so perhaps these springs have just worn more?

When travelling in a straight line and the car lands heavily so the suspension is compressed, the noise happens but difficult to say if it is coming from the right as well as the left sides of the car.

Mine had similar problems on my UK94 when I ran 17" alloys on my stock suspension.

Definitely the inner wheel arch just rubbing the tyre. You could just see the marks on the rubber.

Changed to Bilstien coilover suspension and problem went away.

Hi folks,
I had exactly this problem too.Every time I went over sleeping policemen there was this horrible noise. Have any of you fitted uprated poly-eurethane anti-roll bar bushes? On my car I fitted the MRT uprated anti-roll bars . After about five months the suspension would make this graunching noise which sounded like a very loose bolt being dragged through a mounting hole. I jacked the car up ,disconnected the anti roll bar links and moved the anti-roll bar up and down by hand and heard the noise straight away. I lubricated the bushes with high quality silicone grease used in vacuum pumps. No problems since. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif
Hope this helps.
Regards,
John
