Just got an STi4 and going to replace the double din unit with a Kenwood single. Anyone know where to get a convertor thing for the hole?

Is the standard radio easy to get out?

Halfords now sell a pocket for 15 quid that'll do the job, or you could fit gauges, or a SECS unit, or ...

Loads of options :D

I'm not absolutely sure how to remove the stereo, but I'd guess that you remove the surround fascia (lift up centre console behind gearbox, loosen gearbox surround, unclip surround, then look for screws holding the unit in000)

yup, you can get two single din thingies in the space for a double din. Loads of people have done this in MY01+, and it should work for <MY00. (assuming SECS support these models???)

Ive got the big double DIN standard head unit. If I took it out I would have a single big whole. To fit a Kevwood :) I would have to have a plastic insert to make that hole into 2 slots? That way the new head unit would go into the top slot, and the bottom would be empty.

I swapped out my double-DIN stereo at the weekend so hopefully I can offer some advice. My car is a MY96 WRX import.

First job is to take out the entire centre console unit. To do this, pull out the cup holder thingy at the top and that reveals 2 screws securing the top of the console. Then pull out the ashtray (can't remember the significance of that but I remember doing it!). Then detach the gear lever gaiter and you'll find the 2 screws securing the bottom of the console.

Detach the top and bottom trim surrounds.

You can now pull out the metal unit that contains the receiver/tape deck and the CD player aswell as the ashtray and lighter. Be careful to disconnect the wiring blocks and aerial.

The tape deck and CD player are both secured in the unit with 2 screws in each side. Undo these and everything is free.....but there's no top to the unit so be careful - it's rigidity is just based on the 2 sides being screwed to something in the middle.

Take out the tape deck or CD player and replace it with your single-DIN unit. If you keep 1 old unit in place, you'll be able to judge exactly how far back to position the new one. Screw it in and then take out the old one. Advice - After I fitted my new stereo at the bottom and fitted it all back together, I found it was a bit stuck behind the gearstick and I wished that I'd put it in the top hole.

Take care of any wiring and don't forget the aerial!

Fit a universal DIN-sized plastic pocket (or other accessories that have been suggested) into the spare hole. I bought a universal pocket for £9 from a local stereo shop. Something that surprise me was that the hole that is left seems to be slightly less than 1 DIN ! I got around this by cutting the top off of the pocket to make it 1/8" shorter and trimming the top corners.

As the Haynes manuals always say "Refitting is the reverse of the above steps" or something like that. I did find that the trim surrounds didn't fit back into shape perfectly but this would have been sorted by trimming the pocket a little more so that I didn't have to force it into the hole.

That was the proper car audio bit too. Going to go to a speacilist to get mine. Might get a proper answer. Halfords also tell me I should use 0W40 Castrol RS :rolleyes: yeah, ok then.
