I'd been led to believe that diesels didn't have wastegate actuators. After looking at the turbo on one,it does.Is it possible to raise the boost in the same manner as a petrol turbo ie with a bleed valve/dawes device?

The old fashioned diesel engines have no throttle plate, they simply use the pump to inject a certain amount of fuel. Usually, the first step to increasing boost is to increase the fuelling. Once you have enough fuel going in, and your actually reaching the actuator pressure, you can then up the boost further with a bleed valve.

What engine are you working on? I had a pug 306 and got lots of help from the peugeot sport club forum on how to get more power out of it.

The reason diesels are turbo'd isn't really for more power (although of course it does give them more power) but to get an excess of air for more complete combustion of the fuel that's injected.

It's kind of the opposite way round to a petrol turbo. A petrol turbo is usually overfuelling a little so upping the boost will mean better combustion and give extra BHP. But turbo diesels run so lean that just upping the boost will not really help, as said above you need to up the fuelling (remap or a tuning box) first.

Problem then is that you get so much torque that you're close to the limits of your clutch & gearbox.

What diesel is it you've got?
