A noise has developed when I start the car. It sounds like a graunching just after the engine has fired. Could be something like the starter motor not disengaging properly?

Almost certainly the starter drive not returning quickly enough. If it's not, you'll find out soon when it won't engage one morning as the clutch in the drive will cook in no time!

The starter motor overrun clutch won't cook. That's exactly what it's designed to do - stop the engine driving the starter motor if it stays engaged.

Thanks chaps. Is it something that needs urgent attention, or can it wait to the next service (about another 4000 miles)?

I wouldn't wait if it sounds painful.....
