I have recently been told that a lad in the Rev's Mag had an Sti and blew his engine because he used unleaded instead of super unleaded.
As i have a 96 'N' Sti can anyone tell me if this is true. I can only just afford unleaded never mind super cr*p. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/confused.gif All Info greatfull. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif |
I have been told NOT to use 95 RON unleaded in my WRX as the Jap cars were designed to run on 100 RON stuff and the ecu can only retard the timing by so much. If you use normal unleaded you can suffer pre-detonation and possibly piston meltdown if you give it too much stick. You are better off using super unleaded and if possible an octane booster or failing that get it re-chipped to run on 95 ron go go juice.
|
Craig,
An sti is designed to run on 100ron petrol, it can not retard the ignition enough to prevent pre-detonation with 95ron normal unleaded petrol. You should be running Super Plus or Normal unleaded with octane booster such as Millers as a minimum. Owners of sti's sometimes put super plus with octane booster in to get the octane rating close to 100ron of jap fuel. This is only required for track days or very fast road use etc. I maybe able to sort you out with some millers at near trade price. I will talk to you Saturday morning when we meet in Nottingham. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif edited to add Craig, Make sure you have a full tank on Saturday morning and I'll bring you a bottle of Millers FOC. Don't want you blowing it up when your with us. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif Cheers Lee [This message has been edited by logiclee (edited 09 January 2001).] |
I put Millers O/B in my car - works out to nearly 3p per litre, saves about 5 to 7p per litre over the SUL price.
|
Paul,
Are you saying you can get a bottle of Millers for £1.50? Lee |
Craig mate, i also have a 96 sti and use super and millers octane booster, my advise to you is use at a minimum super but if finances are that tight get a car you can run without running the risk of killing it. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif Rik

No, what i am saying is that i am a thickar$e and did not do my maths properly at school. What i meant to say was that a bottle tereats 10 gallons - 45 litres approx. i believe? Ther last time i brought the Millers i believe i paid around £ 2.20 + VAT per bottle £ 2.58 inc. i buy as case (10 bottles) at a time this equates to 25.8p per gallon - i hate working in litres! this does equate to 5.7 p per litre (i hope!) still cheaper than SUL, which can be between 8-10 p per gallon more than U/L Sorry for any confusion. Sorry i got it wrong in the first place! |
Thanks everyone for the info good job i haven't killed it yet the misses would kill me!!lol http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/tongue.gif
so is everyone saying to us unleaded with this millers stuff or us super unleaded with this millers stuff.(think i my need to get a proton http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif scooby lookalike lol |
ahh, the age old fuel debate!
I have a MY94 WRX wagon, which is 220ps (215bhp?) engine. I have been running it on 95 RON since I got it in april, I'm also considering getting the ECU remapped to 95 RON. I've spoken to other wagon owners who run thiers on 95 RON and they have not had any problems. From what I've been told my WRX should be ok as it's the lowest of the low when it comes to power, mainly as it's only 220ps, but also the wagon is meant to have lower compression ratio, due it the wagon being considered more of a workhorse than the saloon. If the wagon was newer and had more than 220ps, or I had a saloon (240, 260 or 280ps) or an Sti then I would, without question, run it on 98 RON fuel, maybe with a broquet installed, or maybe not, might also go for a PossumLink for a remap. |
Paul,
Don't worry about the maths http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif . I thought I was getting ripped off. LOL Craig, The sti is designed to run on 100ron but will be safe at 97ron which is either super unleaded 97ron or normal unleaded 95ron with a bottle of millers, (Millers gives a 2 point inrease) If you want the ultimte safety and performance you can run super plus with millers this will give you 99ron. This is required if you intend to give you car a lot of stick such as on a track day. Hope this is a little clearer Lee |
http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif Thank's lee I shall have to get some millers in!
|
Craig
Now thats sorted let me muddy the water and suggest that you look at the Ecotek post in the General section, trawl through as there is a bit more info re Octane Boosters and their value/merits. Harj had something to say about it. Worth a looksee |
Oh dear,
I haven't seen the article harge is refering to. Millers have a lot of motorsport pedigree though. The bottle states increases by upto 2 or more points so is a little vague. My mate stocks millers he is going to contact them. £2.50 treats 50 litres so thats 5p a litre. SUL near me is 11p a litre dearer at the moment. Lee |
Lee
Please let me know the outcome of you chat with your mate re the Millers O/B. I would be v-interested in the outcome. Paul |
I did 40,000 Miles over 18months in my 94 Sti Wagon and ran it 90% of the time on normal unleaded and no additives. I never removed the limiter at 112 or whatever so possibly thats why no problem.

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/confused.gif Well after reading the Ecotec post i am once again confused. may be i should use super unleaded and millers to be safe. or just not drive my scooby http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/eek.gif
If anyone can come up with something that deffinatly (spelling crap) works then let me know. Going to try this millers on saturday thank's Lee, And then if anyone at Donno can tell me any more i'll appreciate it. |
I am using Super Unleaded (97 RON) from Sainsbury at 81.5p per litre (which is 6.4p per litre cheaper than SUL from the nearby BP filling station).
Since, nothing is free, what am I missing and is this "cheaper" fuel likely to damage the engine in the long run? (280BHP, P1). The 95 RON UL is the same price (77.9p) at both filling stations??? |
I find supermarkets sell super unleaded much cheaper than "normal" petrol stations ie 81.9 at Sainsburys compared to 84.9 at Esso...so shop around..
|
Sieze,
SUL very hard to find around here, cheapest within around 5 miles is Esso at 86.9 while NUL is 75.9 http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif Will have a response from Millers this weekend, Monday at the latest. Lee |
Lee just been to sainsbury's (at daybrook Arnold)and paid 81.9p for super unleaded Which when you think only a few months ago we were paying 86.9 and over, for unleaded then thats not too bad. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif
See you tomorrow for Donno http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif |
Hi Craig,
I'll still bring you a bottle of Millers. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif I'm at Mansfield and none of the supermarkets have SUL. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif Only one Esso garage is fairly local to me and they have only just dropped from 87.9p to 86.9p a litre. I was in Nottm today should have filled up there. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/rolleyes.gif Cheers, Lee PS. If you like Phil's prodrive sticker on his front bumper get in quick as he has a spare for sale. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif |
Cheers Lee already spoken to him and told him to save it for me. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif
Are you taking your car on the track tomorrow! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif If so Phil is taking me out in his could i be cheeky http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif and get a ride with you as well. I will have my begging face on tomorrow so anyone wanting a passanger to scare just call!!! Also Lee if you have some Millers i would be greatfull [This message has been edited by craigamungos (edited 12 January 2001).] |
Craig,
No I'm not on track, just changed from weekly to monthly pay so I'm a little short of cash this month. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif My Brother-in-law Mark will be with me and we will both be signing on as passangers. I have arranged rides with Phil and John Felstead in his Westie. If Harj is in attendance with Richards 22B see if you can get a ride its awesome. Lee |
