I have a 5 door 94 WRX and my mate has a S2 Audi estate. The S2 is no match for the Scooby on any road with a bend in it, however it has some top end speed, (i think the 6 gears help).
My question, Is there a simple inexpensive mod that will give my standard scooby just a fraction more power that will see off his S2 at speed, as at present they are quite similar.

To get a slight edge, you need a bleed valve and a boost gauge (if you don't have one already).

This will allow you to raise the boost slightly - see Lee's site in the "My Car" section -

Worth getting the car checked on a rolling road to see that it can supply enough fuel to cope with the slight boost increase too. Most can! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Combining that with a good exhaust system and cone filter to free the car up at high revs should give a worthwhile improvement.

And if it doesn't at least it will sound nicer.

chasing faster cars at high speeds is not only very silly but will almost certainly end up with a blown engine - particularly as the WRX doesn't have uprated internals - Audis,Mercs etc are made for high speed autobahn cruising and will happily run at 150mph+. Even with correct fuelling and cooling I would not hold the WRX engine at very high rpm for very long at all. Most common cause I have seen for blown engines is 150mph on supermarket fuel - beware!

take solace in the fact that the WRX is the more sorted car for spirited A to B driving.

Thanks for the info chaps, on the subject of fuel, is super unleaded the norm to use for scoobys or do most of us use the standard stuff.

Andy Tang 14 December 2000 02:04 PM

UK & Euro imports can run on normal unleaded, although most owners would say there's an improvement in running super unleaded (me included).

Japanese imports are designed to run on 100 octane fuel! If that's the case, then the super unleaded (97 octane) here just isn't good enough!

I think most STI owners run their cars, on super unleaded as a minimum. Some will use octane booster with normal unleaded. Some die hard's will use super and octane booster.

The choice is up to you, but I personally wouldn't run a Japanese import on anything less than super!

Use of 95 RON fuel in fairly mildly tuned (upto 240ps) WRXs will be fine assuming that you are not raising boost or modifying anything else.

As soon as you start to tinker, 97 RON should be used as a minimum.....

Ideally, the car should be run on 97 RON anyway (it's only money! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif ) if performance is the issue.

There are some sweeping generalisations in that comment but it is basically sound.

Thanks

Gavin

Lewegie

Just to point out, on the older cars the ECU takes ages to adjust to higher octane fuel, if at all.

Best to reset the ECU after a fill of the good stuff. Look at

Gavin,

If there are some generalisations in my comments, please point them out!!

I'm only repeating what I've been told, so if any of it's wron, I think it would be everyones best interest to know what they are!

I won't take offense, I'd rather be corrected!

Thanks
Andy

Andy,

The "sweeping generalisations" comment was relating to my own post.

The early WRX cars are very similar to early UK cars in power quoted (and actual http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif ) and I was told by Roger Clark Motorsport that I could put 95 RON in without any problems (before I started tinkering).

I would agree that later 280ps WRX models should be run on 97 RON minimum IMHO.

From where we started in this post, I think most people would agree that increasing power and scrimping on fuel is a recipe for disaster!

Thanks

Gavin

'fraid the S2 will get you every time on the untwisty stuff, especially with its overboost gizmo - and its got a 200 cc start on you.
If you pump up the power, then he will up his but his engine won't go bang.
I had an S2 "avant" which was chipped for £1500. Took it to 300 lbft @ 3000 rpm. How much is it going to cost to get same on the Scooby and will it last?
Your Scooby is good in some areas, his S2 is in others - leave it at that and don't kill yourselves

Please excuse my stupidity, but I'm planning on a full time move to the Muppet Forum!!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif
