I bet this has been asked before but has anyone or does anyone use these radar detectors advertised in the backs of the mags......do they really work ?

SteveB 10 October 2000 11:39 PM

I've had mine for about 12 months now and am completly happy with it(Bel 980) Gives approx' 400yds notice of a active camera - most are not on!

Auto Express ran a test of radar detectors in their 4-10th October issue. It can be reached through their web site

So they work do they. What happens in practice, do you get some sort of signal and then you hit the breaks. What do the police say when they see you've got one.

just seen the autoexpress article, very interesting...

Bel 980/990 or Bel VLR - I have the latter and is excellent.

Thoroughly recommended!

Cheers,

Jon.

There was a post last month saying that they were going to be made illegal again!

Anyone know any more about that?

"is that a radar detector on the windscreen"

ps they sure do work

mmason 11 October 2000 10:14 PM

Many thanks for the replies, looks like I'll get one when I pick up my new (one of the last) type R's next week. I know it's a bit late.

PS: are they easy to fit, or do you need to get them fitted ???

Andrew Timmins 11 October 2000 11:01 PM

They fit either by suckers to the windscreen or by a clip to the visor. Dead easy 20 second job.

Best get this months MAX POWER Mag.

Not for the crap cars or the tarts, which there is plenty of but they have a big review of Jammers/detectors, WH Smiths at London Bridge has or had an open copy last night for people to read.

Cheers

I've had a radar detector for about 10 years. I bought it from the States whilst on holiday. It's been excellent and has saved me from a speeding fine about 10 times and stopped me crashing into badly marked road works on back lanes a couple of times too. In the open it has about 1-2 miles range but relies on a car being that distance infront of you (so the copper transmits at that car and you detect it). About 0.5 in town but it's difficult to interpret the indications. You have to get used to them, get to know where they tend to go off and then any indications outside the norm you slow down for.
I wouldn't be without it now, you get such a great feeling doing the correct speed as you pass the copper especially when you know he could hear yoy coming.
I think the law is that it's not illegal to own or use a radar detector but illeagal to act on the advice it gives, daft really. Sorry it's been a long post but hopefully worth it.
