Can anyone tell me where I can get some number plates made up like the small thin plates found on the WRC subaru ??

Got stopped for my WRC size plate on Tuesday night, despite my grovelling and apologies was told that I will be reported... and probably get a 30quid fine

If you get stopped for one offence they tend to look for others.

What is the law with regards front number plates?
Motorbikes don't need 'em do cars really need 'em?

Yes you require a front plate. The law gives letter size, type, and spacing but no size of plate. As long as your letters are correct you can cut the rest of the background away giving a small plate look.

I remember reading a few months ago that new regulations were about to be introduced to restrict the size of numberplates and the lettering font on them to only one approved type, and that this would be enforced.

RE: small front plates.
Boys and Girls, don't bother. Since owning my scoob I have not been tugged, as soon as I put my ickle plate on the front I have had one ARJ thingy (Take to M.O.T centre, get stamp e.t.c...produce documents) and 1 £20.00 fixed penalty. To be honest, explaining that you have put a small one on because it looks good or because you require more air into the front is not going to work. In their eyes, and granted....a "head on speed detection unit" would have difficulty targeting your plate for recognition.

Thats the exact reason I put a WRC sized plate on the front so the OCR speed cameras cant read it. I would rather have a £20 fine instead of a £40 fine and 3 points plus more insurance premium.

Thing is you'll probably get both cos I don't believe the machine would throw it away because it can't read it. It would surely flag it for a person to check it and then you might get caught for having a naughty plate...

The other option is to look at a stick on plate on the bonnet like mine.

I've had it on for a few months and not had any problems.

I keep the old one smashed up in a bag in the boot just in case i get asked.

I cut down the background on mine and then had a mate make some spacers so that I can bolt it into the original mounting points, but it is now in front of the bumper.

Not perfect but does cut down on restricting area by about 50% and the number plate is still legal.

Stuart, did you cut it down yourself?...if so is it easy to clean up the edges etc?

No, my mate did it, don't know how. I just asked him to do it and make up the spacers.
