Hi all, hope somone can help.
I've got an intermittent clicking (heard and felt) when depressing the clutch pedal. Appears to be coming from pedal assembly itself. Quick look reveals nothing wrong. Any ideas anyone - its driving me mad! Cheers in advance D |
Hi Diablo,
I had this, and once the clutch actually failed to return to the full position on a 3 month old car. Sort of sat halfway down. Further investigation made me think it was the little "button" on the clutch pedal assembly sticking in its spring. I gave it a kick: it hasn't done it again and has stopped clicking. Not much use I'm afraid, but that's my story. |
Two possibilities, one from previous threads on the subject (worn nylon bush on the rod that the clutch pedal is connected to), the other from personal experience (dealer told me that the clutch release bearing was sticking). Clutch is otherwise fine so I said I'd get it fixed when the clutch goes.

I have this too on my MY98! It also stuck to the floor once with less than 1000miles on the clock. Like you I kicked it a couple of times and it sprung back up. It's never done it again but I do get the clicking pedal and very occasionally, the pedal sometimes goes very firm and the biting point goes either very high or very low...X files anyone??

Diablo -
Same thing happened to my pedal and I was complaining about it to anyone who listened. It only happened to me - of course - so the dealer couldn't fix it and it was one of those really irritating little problems. I've never admitted to anyone before, but I found the problem. The carpet mat was slipping slightly on it's little hook and the clutch pedal was snagging under it! Could be that simple a problem for you! Tony |
Me too, but it does seem to have disappeared at the moment.
I know how bl00dy annoying it is and can only liken it to some bu66er cracking his knuckles. If it does come back however, I'll give it a kick as others have suggested ! |
Cheers for the replies.
Pretty sure its pedal box related - clutch itself is engaging and disengaging smoothly with none of the symptoms of a sticking bearing. Tony, -lol- carpet mat was first thing I thought of - its happened to me in another car. Will have another look at possible worn bushes/return spring and attack with wd40 ! D |
Mine was sticking and clicking a while back. It was due to a worn pin/bush in the pedal mechanism. Dead easy to replace - just a pain in the posterior to get to being so far down in the bowels! And be warned - Subaru parts diagrams are usually crap! Thus decding which bit you want is a bit of a lottery.... Dave |
The plot thickens as on my MY99 I sometimes get a click when I release the pedal!
But on my previous car, a 1984 Mazda RX-7, I used to get a (much louder too) click when the pedal was moved off the floor. Nige |
Hi Diablo,
Re the clutch pedal, usually the whole clutch pedal box needs to be removed and stripped, greased and any worn bushes replaced. Nito Sounds like your clutch pedal is out of adjustment.Workshop manuals give a spec for pedal height and travel etc.Subaru sent out a bulletin about this problem, also check the spring on the release fork under the intercooler is OK.Have seen them missing/stretched.(watch the clutch pedal sink to the floor under hard acceleration http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif) Suggest you all mention it to your dealers. Regards Steve |
Not sure how true this is but I have just brought a 92K WRX import and the previous owner had the same clicking problem till it got to a point where it only returned up half way, although the clutch did full engage/disengage, His dealer replaced the clutch, clutch plate, servo!, pipes..... and it turned out to be a plastic clip on the pedel box had cracked! not sure of the location but may be of help.

Steve Lawson does know his stuff, so i would imagine the whole procedure of removing and rebuilding the pedal box would sort out any broken clips whilst being good practice to replace other worn bits.

Thanks for the suggestion Steve. I'll have a look at that spring and have a word with the dealer.

Whoops almost forgot, have had problems with the clutch master pushrod. It dries out causing a creaking. We take them out and grease them.
