It has been suggested by a few servicers that if the vehicle has only done 1000 miles, a semi-synthetic oil is a better choice than fully-synthetic (going to fully at 7500) - the reason I have been given is that semi synthetic oil is thicker (surely that's what the viscosity figures are for, and you can get thick fully synthetic oil).

Does anyone know if it realy is better to go for semi at the 1000 mile service? and if I go for semi synthetic, is taking the car on track before its 7500 service going to cause damage?
If so, should I change the oil again before going on track, go straight to fully synthetic at the 1000 service, or even delay the 1000 mile service until 1500, and then use a fully-synthetic oil?

Thanks
Mike (WRX)

Mike.

I would have your service before you venture on track.
Oil choice is pretty much down to yourself.
There seems to be no hard and fast rule, but as IM actually recommend semi-synthetic whilst the car is under warranty, that's probably the sensible choice.
I have been using Magnatec since day 1, only changing to Mobil 1 after the new engine was fitted.
If you do track days it is perhaps advisable to change whatever oil you use more often, perhaps half-way between scheduled servicing. Certainly won't hurt and doesn't cost much.

Stef.
