My younger brother got into a heated discussion with one of his friends last night. His friend has a Punto turbo which from what my brother tells me, may be running a touch more boost and zorst. This friend thinks that due to the power and light weight he would beat me in a 1/4 mile style road grand prix (no corners). I run an 02 WRX with full decat and Tek3 surely I'd beat him hands down?

LG John 18 October 2003 11:29 AM

You would imho. Especially if its a race off the line.

S13DUG 18 October 2003 11:29 AM

yes m8, one word " traction "
Dug.

_evo_bird_ 18 October 2003 11:30 AM

go kick his butt !!

ScrappyDoo2 18 October 2003 11:35 AM

Thanks for the replies guys, I thought so too. They only had 130bhp as standard (although it is a light car). Mine is pushing mid 280's on the rollers with the same in torque. I can feel a whooping coming on...

forest172 18 October 2003 11:40 AM

My wife used to have a punto GT and they are very laggy, and soon run out of puff. I think you`d paste him

Dan_P 18 October 2003 12:18 PM

go and make him look silly on the straight.....then take him out in yours down a nice B road and that should shut him up for a while:D

Gav 18 October 2003 12:22 PM

who's he come as????

go open a can of whoop ass on him:D:D:D

gav..

Nathan L 18 October 2003 01:56 PM

I used to have a breathed upon Punto GT about 175 bhp and boy did it move. 2nd gear to 4th was manic to say the least. However I now have a 280 + bhp MY01 WRX and it would have killed the Punto in every way.

Traction in the Punto was impossible, it used to spin the wheels in the dry when trying to do a full bore standing start in 1st and 2nd. Despite it being lowered by over 40mm torque steer was the worst thing though, just make sure you don't get too close or it will pull sideways into you.

ScrappyDoo2,

If it goes ahead let us know what happens ;)

Cheers,

Claire

BlackScoobyWRX 18 October 2003 04:39 PM

ScrappyDoo2 - I'm in your neck of the woods, could be good for a gathering this one !! lol
You won't have any problems I'm sure
;o)

ScrappyDoo2 19 October 2003 12:29 PM

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the posts, Nathan - nice to get an insiders view! BlackScoobyWRX - I'm not sure if I've seen you about are you the chap with the heavily modified bugeye (morettes, periscope, extra bonnet vent etc.)? I know it shouldn't even need to be thought about but you never know with these little turbo cars. I don't feel as confident as I used to after seeing the black corsa turbo at Elvington for the scooby shootout... But after hearing Nathan's post (i.e. a heavily modified Punto) I'm 100% that this fella in his pretty standard and old Punto would get left for dead. Scooby_Loo - I'll let you know, although from speaking to my brother the lad is all mouth and no trousers and wouldn't show. Anybody had an encounter with MR2 turbos? Had a chase with one the other night and he was pretty quick - I don't know if it was tweeked mind.

matty01 19 October 2003 12:37 PM

"a mate" once came across a MR2 turbo import and "he" was quicker than the MR2 down a backroad (scooby was a uk ,partial de-cat) MR2 had good corner speed but could not quite keep up on the straights....apparently ;) *cough*

16vmarc 19 October 2003 12:53 PM

I cant believe this thread, a punto vs a scoob?

monstermunch 19 October 2003 01:12 PM

After you've wooped him on the straight then challenge him on the twisties just to rub the salt in :)

MM

chrisp 19 October 2003 01:17 PM

Pick a SPOD RWYB day and tell him to meet up there along with all the other guys and loser buys the drinks all night, it will be a cheap night out for you :D.

jonny gav 19 October 2003 02:03 PM

its never going to happen, there is no way a fiat can do a 1/4 of a mile without breaking down :D:D:D

Dazza's-STi 19 October 2003 05:35 PM

Yep, watch out if ya miss a gear and he gets in front, cos flying debris and oil will be all over the place... Fiat... no chance!

JohnnyR6 19 October 2003 07:28 PM

What is it about kids with quick hatches thinking their car is the fastest thing on the road? A kid told me his tigra would beat my old cav gsi as his was pushing out 170bhp when i laughed he told me it had a superchip and an exhaust. (looked like a peco back box)s'pose it was fast to him.

Spooks 19 October 2003 08:40 PM

Wouldnt be afraid of the punto, now the Coupe turbo thats been altered may cause some probs, but thats another story.
Spooks

Leslie 22 October 2003 04:08 PM

Only one way to find out isn't there! Take a trip to Wymeswold airfield, on the way to Leicester, and tell to put his money where his mouth is.

Les :)

Scooby96 22 October 2003 05:22 PM

If it does beat you then remark, "but hey you'd have no chance in the wet and twisties" yawn, yawn :D

HELLOM8 22 October 2003 05:22 PM

It's not just young kids with hot hatches that give it the bigg'en.
I've had many people at work (mostly in there late 30's early 40's) saying that there Mondeos and Vetra would take me apart.
One bloke with an M3 went on about how crap Subaru's are for about year until he came up behind me flashing his lights, lets just say he never said anything after that:D.

RichWalk 22 October 2003 05:27 PM

Just make sure its raining and I bet his wont even start!

MISS SCOOBY STI 24 October 2003 04:33 AM

ScrappyDoo2 - re. MR2 Turbos. I've got a STI and my brothers got a MR2 Turbo (tweaked by TRD) and it can shift, believe me!! Have yet to go against each other down the 1/4 mile.....

CraigH 24 October 2003 07:42 AM

Breaking News!

£20k 4wd 2litre breathed on turbo car is apparently faster than 7 year old 1.4 turbo

Not comparing like for like are you?

We've got a car that's similar in price to your Scoob, only 2wd so I'm sure you'd kill it in the twisties lol, 1.3 with about half your Scoobs power and way less than half its torque. Would be a bit fairer don't you think?

V sad lol

StickyMicky 24 October 2003 08:06 AM

you will be allright as long as he doesnt swap the punto for a metro

hoyleyboyley 24 October 2003 09:10 AM

:O OMG, a scooby lose!! ;)

i think its more down to the driver than you might think TBH, its been known for scoobies to lose @ the pod to all sorts of hot hatches...

for my sins i own a lightly modded Punto GT, and I would expect an 02 (bugeye?) WRX thats modded to win. I live in the real world- and theres not alot of contest is there... especially if its TLGP.

*however*, (dones flamesuit) :) once rolling, it might not be such a walkover - you'd still win of course, and competently so, but i dont think it would be a complete romp on home. say a couple of car lengths, which in fairness is bloody good for a 1.4 FWD versus 2.0 4WD.

all down to model variant of course, a UK classic would be a very close thing (IMO) and could go either way, before you get to instant licence losing speeds...(say 50-120)

of course, that's the sort of result your gonna get when you put a
20k car v a 5k one...

TON3 24 October 2003 09:16 AM

Yeah have that race with him, give it 5grand from pull off and listen 2 his excuses at the end!! :D :D

NACRO 24 October 2003 09:34 AM

quote: "of course, that's the sort of result your gonna get when you put a

I didn't know Puntos cost 20K, my Impreza cost about 5K+£50 for a remapped chip. I have no idea what BHP it gives but I'm fairly confident it would see off a Punto. Quite funny really to think there are people with Puntos who think they can "do" a UK car. A very heavily modifed one would have a chance I suppose like anything.......the rest, well keep on dreaming.
