changed the oil on my MY97 to Motul 300v. it has been running on Magnatec () from the dealer & once myself. but now it's got Motul 300v (15w50) in, from a dead cold start, there is 5 seconds of tappet noise before the '97 slap is the only thing noticable :(
it drives much smoother, specially when cold. any ideas ? is it that 15w50 is too thick cold ? compaired with 10w40 of before? it's been a couple of weeks and it's not got any better :( Steve [Edited by ScoobyDuck - 10/17/2003 5:33:19 PM] |
I suppose it has been quite cold these last few days... so it could be a bit thick on startup and take a few seconds to get round the engine?
Mine is running the same oil viscosity grade, and I haven't noticed anything like that, other than my overly loud ticking solenoid. (Well, apart from the time when I forgot to disconnect the crank sensor ) Edited: It does stay a bit warmer on the IOW than "up north" ;) in England, so maybe I'll see something in the coming weeks. Last year at this time I was running the car with 10W40 and then 5W40, so maybe by accident I have avoided the problem? [Edited by dnb - 10/17/2003 11:41:36 PM] |
humm.. maybe Dave. 10w40 is PROBABLY better for the winter - bit late now. :(
but it certainly feels alot smoother from cold & I always warm up (coz it slaps! :() neva above 2500rpm & no boost for a good 10mins and cool down (coz I've already blown the turbo :() If it gets warmer, I'll see if it goes away.. Steve |
Steve,
I had the same when I switched from 10W/40 Magnatec to 15W/50 Mobil 1. It p****d me off so much I took it out after a week and replaced it with the 'New' 5W/30 Magnatec (.....Shhhhh don't tell anyone ;)). It now alot quieter from cold....so I'm sticking with that. Last change I went from Mobil Motorsport 15W50 to Motul Comp 15W50 and it is much quieter and smoother.. I am not sure on the cold mornings I shall check this tomorrow morning...
It used to tick like anything on semi 10W40 the dealer used to use. JGM :) |
cheers Scott, Jim & Jolly...
will monitor it and see how it goes. interesting threads Jim. Steve |
