I was driving though traffic today, quite slowly for apporx 15 mins when the engine started to misfire and not want to pull. Typical type of oiled plugs sysndrome, but not as it would run at low revs. Tried to rev it to get it cleared, but no change so had to stop and get RAC home. The car is a 94 WRX. Anyone any ideas ???

I had a similar problem on My Sti2. It turned out to be one of the coil packs had broken down. Not sure if it is the same for you but I have 1 coil per cylinder, mounted on top of the plug.
Basically if you haven't got a coil pack on top of the engine you have as well.
Did your cat warning light come on? if so this could be your problem as no spark = no fuel burnt = fuel in cat = warning light comes on.

Should cost about £100 all in including labour to fix, part is available from UK dealers cost about £50 the rest is labour as it is a git of a job depending on which one has gone.

Replacing the coilpacks isn't that hard. And, if this is your problem, which is plausable, you should replace all of the units at the same time, as they will all be of that certain age now!

While your at it its worth having the plugs out and checking/gapping them.

Only takes me about 20/30 mins to remove,check and refit all four plugs including removing and refitting the air box/filter and washer container to get access.

Your problem could also be related to the maf meter or map sensor.

if I read you correctly - the engine was misfiring and then wouldn't pull or rev - but ran without misfire at low revs.

If this is a correct summary of the symptoms then it may be that a sensor (or circuit) is faulty and the ECU has gone into failsafe mode - no boost/rev limit of 4000rpm running without any sensors but on 'safe map'.

Thanks for your replies, have tried it this evening and completly dead. However before it would run reasonably smoothly at tickover. Just would not rev or have any pulling power. It now seems more like a sensor problem, I took the flywheel sensor out and cleaned the dust of it, but still would not work. Have tried interogating the ECU, but this only shows up that the speed snsor is not working, this is because I did not have the speedo cable fitted whilst it was away being modified. On monday prior to this the car did 700 miles, no problem, on a run from Newcastle to south wales. Any other ideas ????

Without the speedo cable the car will not run as it needs the reed switch signal that is generated from the speedo, re fit the speedo cable and it may be all right Woth a try anyway.

I have found the problem,its the Fuel Pump ! Once the car would not start I checked the Ignition OK. Then the Fueld- Not OK. See new post for further problems.
