No, they will catch on the arches, particularly on the rear

How do 18s fit on the classics I've seen?
Or is only the older ones that they dont fit on?

They use a differnt tyre size. A 225/35 has a less pronounced sidewall bulge than a 225/40 and therefore fits (just!)
