hey i dont know if any of you know, but Subaru is hard at work to make a new STi As said by a senior source at Subaru, "Subaru has something quite special in the pipeline. We're now working on a 3.0-litre turbo Impreza for Japan and Europe that will generate in excess of 350bhp." "Unfortunately, we're having teething problems with the transmission as the current WRX STi six-speed box isn't capable of handling the torque the engine produces." Several solutions are being investigated, with the most popular being to ask a company such as Getrag, which has much experience in building heavy-duty gearboxes, to work on the transmission. But before you race down to your nearest dealer, bear in mind how long this is likely to take. Development of the car is said to be very complicated. Our source suggests we won't see the 3.0-litre turbo powering a Subaru until the next Impreza model change, due in 2007. Also, out in Japan and Europe, is the Subaru Impreza WRX STi Spec C Limited. Its I4, 2.0L engine produces 335 hp @ 7000 rpm, 280 ft lb @ 3750 rpm, with 0-60 in 4.3 seconds and top speed of 160 mph (est). No word on US launches yet. i know the the one you're talking about (it has the alfa nose and 450bhp), but i really can't see that thing flying around the WRC....:cool:

Thats full of holes. For example, the spec C isnt that power level at all and its not available officially in europe, its a Japan market model only.
The 6 speed box is very strong too, they also have a 5 speed in the 6 speed casing homologated that is bulletproof when used in the GroupN spec C that is winning all the Production WRC rounds, and that car is putting out a hell of a lot more torque than this road going 3 litre will. |

I did one run on the standing start stuff and one lap on the handling track, that lap is when my engine failed, i should have won that. :([img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img] Nice picture of the car though, the last of it moving powered by the original engine. |

These so-called scoops tend to be peppered with obvious technical inconsistencies, and their credibility is harmed even further when they repeatedly portray obviously fake, doctored pics as "spy shots" of forthcoming cars. Wonder what would happen if you took a well-thumbed copy of AE back to Tescos and asked for a refund, on the grounds that you wanted a motoring newspaper, but actually ended up with a work of fiction... ;) |
What was said about the problems with the gear box is true. Subaru are having problems with it in regards to extra torque. They having to redesign the box for the new engine speced to be used in the "concept car" and Legacy because of this. A 3ltr impreza has possibly on the cards for a long time according to a friend who used to work at Prodrive but was put on the back shelf because Subaru didn't think it was worth the investment.

The STi 6 speed is a very strong gearbox. Just look at the solid plate used in the middle to support the main bearings. It's much stronger than a 5 speed box (and a lot heavier).

Subaru do have a flat 6. It was used in the SVX and I think it is an option in the Outback in some markets. If they turbocharged that 350bhp would be easily achieved. Think about it 1.5 x an STi's output would be 420 bhp!

the svx made over 200 horses without a turbo 350 would be no problem but the boxes would be near the limit so they would be crapping themselves to sell them due to fear of waranty claims

Subaru make more than one type of gearbox you know. Have you ever seen an STi9 Box used in the spec C?

The SVX 3.3 engine is a heavy lump though, add that to the weight of the 6 speed box and your scoob will be as heavy as a Skyline !

The spec C is being imported by litchfield imports according to the Oct EVO, the power and torque figures are 335bhp/280lb,ft. Good test - blows away the M3 CSL and gives the 911 GT3 a run for its money.

its not 335BHP prior to a remap and high flow exhaust though.

that's right john :) it requires more work to get it anywhere near the 335bhp.
the japanese spec c is just like my japanese sti with 272bhp on tap. it has noticable differences like the vent opening on the roof, hand wind-down window at the back, no climate-control, no spare wheel and etc and is at least 100kg lighter (lightness is where the power difference comes in). only reason i went for the jap spec sti instead was because i thought for that kind of money the rear windows should at least be electric plus i don't like that small spoiler :p [Edited by AK47 - 10/13/2003 3:23:58 AM] |
Just as a side note, local engine builder here has built a WRX with a 3 litre 6 cylinder boxer, with twin VF34 turbos, custom Dogbox, and AP racing triple plate clutch. Car is designed for hillclimb duties and at its current state of development is having traction issues....It makes around 600hp.

What about the flat six that's in the Legacy Outback at the moment? Is that a totally different engine from the old SVX lump?

The EVO article didnt mention that bit, maybe some smoke and mirrors there! still its great to see an impreza put up and hold its own against the finest hardware from BMW and Porsche.

And SOA rumors tell that the next Gen Legacy will be able in 2005 in the US and will be powered by a version of the 2.5l turbo detuned to about 270hp and a version of the H6 that will get a power boost from 212hp to
250hp... And the B11S concept is powered by a turbo 3.0 H6 with an output of 400hp... |
