My 95MY STI 11 speedo has had the gearbox conversion to give the correct speed and avoid the speed restrictor but ticks like mad , this basically is driving me mad http://bbs.sidc.co.uk/frown.gif . Nothing I know about seems to solve this , does anyone else have this problem , is there a solution other than replacing the lot and will that really cure it . It seems fairly common.
Maybe I'll just turn the stereo up..or drive faster don't notice it then.... http://bbs.sidc.co.uk/smile.gif

I had the same problem on MY96 WRX a few weeks back.

It broke after around 500 miles of clicking on the motorway then the check engine light came on as well. Wierd.

Get it changed before it breaks !!! The guy at the garage said the "lad" who originally fitted it had kinked the cable....

I reset my trip meter before going to PE the other week, my clock clicked constantly until I realised the trip meter wasn't registering the (Kilometers).

I pressed it again firmly, the clicking stopped and the distance started to register.

The reason your check engine light came on is that their is a reed switch in the speedo head that sends speed pulses to the ecu.
If you disconnect the speedo then the ecu doesnt get these pulses and goes into a sulk.
It actually registers a fault code 33 (from memory) and more importantly limits you to 4500rpm until you fix the problem and reset the fault memory in the ecu.
