Yes, the car does have a rev limiter, which stops the engine from spinning too fast and preventing any damage. You won't have harmed the engine by hitting the rev limiter.

More or less all performance engines produced today have a rev limiter on them, the UK turbo and STi's included. Usually the fuel is cut off first, then the ignition is cut until the revs drop below the red line.

No damage would have been done, as that is the reason the limiter is put there, to prevent damage occurring.

Does anyone know if the standard turbo engine has a rev limiter on it?

I had an unpleasant experience the other day where I hit the red line and power instantly dropped. I didn't hang around to see if it was a limiter, I changed up to stop any potential damage. Would it have harmed the engine?

The Subaru ECU's have 4 rev limiters which are set to come in with differing degrees of severity.

If you are in 4th going downhill and gently approach the rev limit it will randomly cut off one injector at a time to slow the car down. You would not even notice it. The car just would not go any faster. This goes to the other extreme where you forget to change gear in 1st of 2nd and the engine spins so quickly into the limiter that all injectors cut and you get a big shut off.

Not limiter in the world will help if you go from 2nd to 1st rememeber.

Does the scooby have a limited other than the 7000rpm (or whatever it is). Our FTO has one that comes on at about 6000rpm (limit's normally 8400rpm) when the engine is cold. I've had a similar experience (same place) with the scooby accellerating when the engine might not be warmed up enough although it could also be the turbo overboost thingy cutting in now I've got my SS and ITG.

I don't think it's good idea to limit the car BEFORE it has had a chance to warm up correctly. This could and will lead to many engine problems..

I didn't mean to imply that I take it to the danger paint when it's cold - it's done it well under that - hence my question. I'm trying to decide if it's the rev limiter or boost cut off thingy or whatever.

Does somebody have a "simple schematic" on how the turbo works on the scooby with all the sensors and how they interact with each other and the ECU ?
