A mates laptop has been playing up so he tried to reinstall windows, but now keeps getting the following message:

Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The setup log files should contain more information. Press OK to view setup log file
Pressing OK brings up the log files as:

Error: The signature for Windows XP Home Edition is invalid. The error code is
fffffc02
The system cannot find the message text for message number 0xfffffc02 in the message file for syssetup.dll

xxx

Fatal Error:
Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The log files should contain more information

He's tried booting from:
1) the recovery disc supplied with the laptop
2) a friends CD of Windows XP Home Edition
3) the floppy boot disc's downloaded from Microsoft

and still no joy :(

The laptop is 13 months old, 1.2ghz 128MB
Any ideas?

Has he tried a "fresh" install or is he trying to overwrite what he has?

Might be a good idea to format the lot and start from fresh.

He tried to repair his original install first, then tried a fresh install, reformatting the hard drive etc.
It goes ok untill the message in my first post pops up at around 39mins remaining.

This Microsoft page seems to match your first error message - but talks about it applying to upgrades from one version of Windows to another..........

It may give some clues though.....

clicky

Hmmmm..... I'm thinking my mates laptop has got BIG problems.

Just tried to install 98se and even that causes problems-
It starts off from the cd and gives me options etc, then when its about to start formatting it asks me to insert the 98 cd (which is already in the drive) and it wont read the disc any more!

Also tried with 95 with no luck

Bob (p1ssed off with it now)

You got me beat now.........

What was the original problem? Could it be some sort of BIOS glitch?

Not sure what the original problem was. First time I saw it, it had problems booting up.

Feck it... I give up :(

Try deleting the entire partition then reboot, re-create it the try again, if not your HDD may have a bad sector on it, you could try downloading a low-level formating tool, or just get a new one!
