Intercooler £1000
Turbo £1000 injectors £500 Sorted gearset/box £3000 there's 4 quick things off the top of my head, you will be pushing it with a wrx if you want 400bhp unless you go internal, depending on which route you choose from start to finish. going internal can cost between 4 and 8 grand that's stage 3 for me! but to tell you the truth i'm hoping its not going to happen. I'm running around 380bhp and i'm getting fed up with piling more money into the car  the rear diff gave up last week  Scott [Edited by RB5SCOTT - 10/3/2003 10:50:03 PM] |
Goes quite well once you've waited for it to spool up. If still on a 2 litre you need to keep it on the boil because of the size of turbo required to get that sort of power.
On a twisty road a 300 or 350 BHP Scooby (all on 2 litres) could probably keep up, the little turbos pull a lead whilst you wait for the bigguns to spool up which then pull back on the straight again. Personally I think 350 BHP on a 2 litre is a sensible limit to keep it streetable. 400 BHP is more point and squirt, get the front wheels pointing straight before you plant it or get dragged into the bushes in the dry. Changes the car completely. AFAIK I am the only one stupid enough so far to dyno a UK non-STi engine over 400 BHP. I never trusted that it wouldn't just blow up, I only did it because I knew a bigger engine was on the way, and I didn't do many miles in this state of tune. It consumed vast amounts of octane booster and had to run far too much boost to achieve it. I don't recommend it unless you want a potentially very expensive and unreliable car. To run a (hopefully) safe and driveable 400-450 BHP I have/am adding the following measures to produce the power at lower boost: Water injection Individual cylinder knock control Headers 2.36 litre capacity Flowed STi heads [Edited by john banks - 10/3/2003 11:12:15 PM] |
Good thing is sg72 you have the internals and the box to take it, or at least take it better :D Should be good. I'm sure you'll give me trouble when we go side by side at a local airfield at some point since we have the same turbo and you can rev it higher :D

Hi
Got (my01)wrx ppp (and boosting at 1.35 bar  ) and a full decat. I have wasted one std gearbox :( Getting 300 plus a little :) want to go for 400...what do i have to do? I don't want to change my motor :) steve |
You are going to have to change it a little bit. :p
Apologies..................bit pissed. |
Yep i know .
Just want to know what I have to do  Reason is 'just for the hell of it :)' may mean keeping motor longer than I planned but; hay ho why not :) steve |
:rolleyes:Not another one...;)
|
eh ?
what u mean mark? steve ps can be a bit slow at times :) |
Pistons, rods or a new age STi engine
6 speed box or uprated gearset for yours, uprated clutch Fuel pump, regulator, injectors, FMIC, headers, water injection, turbo, exhaust, inlet pipe, induction, remap You might be easier buying a classic lightweight STi because the gearset and engine should be up to about the 350 BHP you'll need to go as fast ;) Then you can just add the bolt ons listed above, not all of which you will need for only 350 BHP. Difference between 350 and 400 BHP on a standard engine in terms of reliability is probably significant. Save weight and save yourself the bother and the extra lag involved. |
May sound like a dumb question, but wot does a 400 bhp scoob go like?
|
Thanks Scott
Like the idea of having wrx with 400Bhp. Like the idea of having a motor that is Dif,ie it is not just a 'off the peg one' Plus totaly p@ssed me off spending over 20k to buy a uk wrx, in the first place :( It is now worth about 10k. This includes spending 10k modding it to the std it is. |
Cheers John

Good points John
I forgot about the Pump, regulator, clutch :) jees, how much money have i spent and forgotten about  Scott, btw if i think of anything else i will jott down here p.s ! mappable ECU plus mappers time :) cost = thousands :D |
I agree with John - 350bhp makes for a very nice road car. And probably one that last longer :). Although this is, again, with a classic... the additional weight of the fugly might mean that the 350 needs to be nearer to 400 to make up the weight difference?
I have actually reduced the boost on my 400ish car (standard UK internals) down to 350ish for 'normal use' as it's plenty, thank you very much :D And to give it a chance to live a little longer  |
The flatter and wider the torque curve, the nicer it is to drive daily IMHO. The lack of boost you have to run to make 350 rather than 400 makes it far more progressive and less on/off.
|
You could go for a Twin boost map Setup with an AVC-R.
Lower boost for everyday. Higher for. Well whatever. 'Sway I'm going. |
Forgot to mention.
Along with majority of mods listed above,by John STI 5 Type R Ltd |
sg72 did you give in and decide to monster...........good man :D You'll have to take me for a spin :D
|
Well lads
I guess the secrets out. I'm trying to put the correct parts together as prescribed. When I say I'm. I really mean trying to find people who Know what the're doing to build and sort it for me. Oh for a nice garage and time off to tinker. John. I'll be at the R/R day in November (prepare to be underwhelmed.) Good onya Mate!(Should beat an M5 though Tee Hee) Kenny. No Probs Pal.( I Know you like to bum lifts in Sorted Scoobs. And seen as yours maybe gone by then? ) Anyway Much dya get for that free D/V.LOL. |
Said dv is still in my glove box. If the car doesn't sell soon I'm going to be seriously tempted to re-fit it :D
I must admit I do like a spin in a fast scooby. There are scoobys and then there are SCOOBYS! |
Stephen
Under Ian Armstrong's desk at SP's (Stan Palmers) there is TD05 Front entry turbo from Andy Forrest Walbro fuel pump (and Reg) STi (pink) Injectors STi Intercooler All the hoses from Jamie .........Lots of cash for 330 to 350 BHP in the end but can't see a safe (ish) 400 BHP Midlife.... PS tempted to add the cost of each item in post.... :( |
give it clean that mighy help ;):p
|
Hi Faster, I guess your'e back from thr Sportsman then. Guess who walked out and forgot to pay..doh !!

Your brakes look smart... :) :) at 15 MPH down Hardwick Circus stopping power over the top but a bit more use on the millitary Road to Newcastle :) :) . Goodspeed's on holiday 'till 11th Oct but I guess Gussy and me will be knocking on his door at about the same time. Abbey................ Trying to think what's better about my car than yours but struggling !! I know....my front numberplate is more oblong than yours !! Glad to know I won't go to jail over unpaid bill..Sorry Lordy :( :( Midlife..... |
the over the top brakeing is because the pads are a little noisey ;)
