my MY99 give off an unpleasant smell
i have try a pair full pulls
and i smell te clutch
is this normal
and no i don't have my left foot on the pedal
how much work to replays the clutch

Very fast starts will put a tremendous load on the clutch, and the burning smell is most likely the clutch slipping and overheating.

Repeated abuse can lead to an early clutch failure, although many cars do seem to survive many 10s of thousands of miles without problems. I suppose it depends on how harsh you are.

To replace the clutch is quite expensive, and requires about 3 1/2 hours labour to remove the gearbox etc. and put everything back together again.

Yeah, I have to say that I've noticed burning smell even with minimal abuse - trying to move the car slowly in a snowy car park caused quite a lot of smell, even though I was hardly moving. I haven't done any clutch-dumping starts, and don't intend to...

I have noticed with both our MY99 and Forester vehicles that its quite easy to induce clutch burn (with attendant smell) with only modest slippage. Must be something peculiar to the models because I've never noticed it on any previous cars (including an Alfa race car which has done numerous 6000rpm standing starts!). Puts me off the idea of doing race-type standing starts in the Impreza. Generally, I have a feeling the clutches are not that strong. Certainly they shouldn't be used to hold the car on hills, etc - as if anyone would do that anyway. http://bbs.sidc.co.uk/smile.gif

when I picked up my MY98, I let it idle for a while on the dealer's forecourt, then I could smell a burning type smell. When I questioned the dealer, he opened the bonnet and showed me all the waxy sealant that had been sprayed all over the engine bay, for when the car was shipped over from Japan. This he said was burning off and giving the smell.

Even now, 3000miles later, If I take it for a hard run, it stinks! Now, it's not clutch burn, because I would/could never slip the clutch, and I'm not into fast gettaways and 0-60 dashes. When I open the bonnet, the greenish coloured stuff is liquid (melted) and is all over the place. The next morning it's it's solidified again, just as wax does.

Is this what you guys are smelling ?

Does it smell like bad eggs? If so it is a result the sulphur combustion byproducts combining in the cat. to produce small quantities of hydrogen sulphide. It does'nt go away with increasing mileage since the sulphur is in the fuel. Fortunately the legally permitted amount of sulphur in petrol is to be reduced. This should hopefully reduce the smell of bad eggs.

i try one's a dumping start in tird gear
with mij corolla coupe
a few weeks later the clutch is slipping
i wait now a few weeks en i wil see it is wax or friction material

I have the same smell in my 98MY car - the cause maybe that green waxy stuff on the engine . The smell is quite strong when the engine is hot i.e. after a fast motorway run, it even occurs when the car is stationary and idling, which rules out the cluch and brakes.

I think in your case it seems to be a burning clutch causing the unpleasant smell. However, in my case the smell is NOT caused by the clutch or the brakes because the car is stationary and just idling when it occurs.
