Can anyone tell me which part is the "transponder" in the MY03 remote key, so I can take it out and attach it to the steering column (thereby allowing me to use an STi key with no transponder).

Pictures would help! :)

someone has done this surely! ;)

Sorry can't help, but have to ask "WHY"?.

.....and removed the factory fit imobiliser. I doubt it.

I'd rather live with the OE key, and keep the extra imobiliser, rather than change the key (although the STi one does look nice) and remove the additional theft protection.

I'd guess most owners would agree, especially if it meant hacking the original key to bits and sticking it to the steering column / shroud.

sickboy 26 September 2003 02:41 PM

aha why indeed! Because the key is HUGE, and I have a Cat 1 alarm with a remote fob which opens the doors for me.

So basically I'll have more room in my pocket (I've got several other keys plus one of those clunky 4 way keys for my garage door locks.......

There was another thread that summed it all up nicely, but I'm damned if I can find it now.....

Agreed the transponder would be an extra handy level of protection- but I've assessed the risk and reckon I can live without it.

From Scoobymania.....

STI 7 Key Blank

How much nicer than the factory supplied suitcase sized key is this?

Solid Aluminium construction, it even feels better, never mind the looks!

Suitable for all grey import WRX/STi 'New Age' Impreza WRX models.
Cars with factory immobilisers (mainly UK model cars) will need to remove the transponder chip and fit it into a smal (supplied) transponder bubble which will also go onto the key ring.

Product Prices STI 7 Key Blank £29.00

that's the one. However I don't want another appendage hanging off it though (which is what the transponder bubble is....) The STi key can;t have a transponder put in it (it's a solid lump!)

Its a tiny little chip! take the key apart and you will come across it. Its about a 2mm thick 5mm wide and 10mm long.

It has the corner cut off like a phone sim card, but smaller and black ;) also when you stick it somewhere make sure its pointing the right way! (i have mine stuck in the ignition barrel, but don't tell anyone ;)

Scott,
much obliged.

I'll give it a go- you confirmed what I suspected was the chip, but I didn't realise it had a direction.

cheers
