Just purchased a new lappy. What's the best way to transfer *everything* from my old one to the new one? I already have Ghost...

You could use a 2.5 inch USB drive caddy. They are about 9 quid from ebuyer
Just plug the drive from your old laptop into it and into the USB and drag the data across. It's always best to do a fresh install on a new machine and just copy the data. |
If they both have nic then a crossover cable will be quickest.

sorry, should have qualified.... don't want to reinstall apps if poss. would rather drop the hard disk into the new machine, but, I want to put a bigger HD in at the same time.

IIRC Ghost will only image for that hard drive size, but i may be wrong :)

I have used a drive caddy (basically you take the 2.5" HDD out of you old machine and place it into the case). It then has a USB cable or firewire cable that plugs into you PC. This works well and the drive also draws the power from the USB/firewire connection. Alternatively you can by a laplink USB cable if both PC have USB or a NIC cable if both PCs have ethernet.
Another way is to use a PCMCIA card with either a compact flash card (I also have one of these at 256MB) or use something like a PCMCIA click drive. If you have loads of data then the drive caddy or the cables are the best option. |
