Seem to be taking on water in the boot area, but it is actually not in the spare area but to the right and down the side where there is a gap to the body and rear bumper. Car is WRX Type RA, looks like an air vent is down there but wonder how water is getting in, any ideas?

Probably through the light cluster.
(A common problem with 22B :-(
