Our leccy bill came the other day and we were a bit shocked. We're on that monthly budget thing where you pay the same each month and some months you win, some you lose but overall it all works out. We've been paying like this for 3 years and never had a problem, our quarterly bill works out at around £70.

This bill, however, is for £150  and works out at around 1800kWh for the quarter. We haven't had any new appliances and we were also away for 3 weeks of the quarter.

The meter was read on the 11/09 @ 51557 and we got the bill on 18/09 and read the meter again @ 51649 so in 7 days we'd apparently used 92kWh. After speaking to NPower tonight, we took another reading, which was 51798 which means we've used another 149kWh in 4 days and we were away on Sautrday night till Sunday afternoon with everything switched off.

I did a quick test tonight, using the little wheel that spins round. With all our normal stuff switched on (fridge/freezer, TV, stereo, lights, computer + peripherals etc.) the wheel does 3.95rpm. According to the meter 250 revolutions = 1kWh. So if all our stuff was switched on for 4 days (which it wasn't) we'd use 91 kWh which is less than our meter says we've used.

Having spoken to NPower, they say we have to take 1 reading a day until friday and give them the figures and we have to speak to the Energy Efficiency helpline before they'll take things further.

Does anyone have experience of this kind of thing happening?Obviously, either the meter is faulty or I'm powering Blackpool lights!

Any advice or stories of similar happenings most welcome.

Edited to correct dodgy maths :D

Beware the £70 a month electricity bill!!

We live in a very small bedsit, our average electricity bill is £10 to £30 maximum one month it was quite large, as stated above.

Paid it, but now I'm questioning it! We did nothing we usually don't - just assumed I left the PC on too much or something.

Mine has just shot up too, from 22 quid a month to 30 quid a month, same with my Gas too

Don't forget, the unit prices have increased ;)

But it's the number of units used that concerns me.

well i think our meter reads high too as we used to use £5 a week in new house its £15!
house is bigger so we could use a little more but not 3 times!

I got a leccy bill some months ago for £2000. a few days later i got a letter saying it was a mistake. ever since then, my statements have shown a deficeit of £2000. Suppose I shpuld really take it up with them but as they aren't trying to make me pay it, i haven't bothered.
