My mates laptop decided to throw a wobbly(dont know what but it was well screwed apparently) so he decided to re-install windows XP.
His XP disc (as supplied with his laptop) is faulty and has fecked up! He has tried my disc but its specific to my laptop.
He's at the stage of installing XP with 39mins remaining but it wont go any further cos of the faulty disc.

Would a proper full copy of XP solve his problems?
Does anyone have a copy he could borrow? His laptop is licensed for XP home edition so its not stealing from Microsoft!

or where is the cheapest place for him to buy a copy of XP home edition?

I think that you can download a set of floppies (6) from MS, I've used these to install XP before....

tell him to go back to his supplier. If the lappy was supplied with a recovery disk it should work. Doesn't matter if it is out of warranty. Tell him to quote sale of goods act 1979 which states that goods must be 'fit for their purpose.' If they tell him he needs to waits days or weeks to have it fixed tell them he is entitled to a loaner for the duration.

This works every time. I am a professional complainer.

the muppet bought it from Curry's over a yr ago and they have told him to feck off basically!

I looked into the 6 boot floppy discs from MS but thats only any good if his laptop is working when he creates them, which it isnt.

Borrowing a copy of XP from my brother inlaw 2moro so will try that for him.

If he goes back to Currys with the laptop AND the dodgy CD, they should replace the CD for him. As FB says, quote Sale Of Goods Act at them if you get a negative response.

Like yours, the CD will probably be an OEM version, bios locked to the make of laptop.

If Currys refuse to sort it report them to trading standards

A full retail version of Windows XP should work - it then comes down to needing the correct drivers for the laptop.

These should have been supplied with the PC - and are probably on the disc that doesn't work!

Still got trouble.
He got a working boot disc and did a reinstall of windows XP but during the install got loads of error messages telling of missing files or unreadable files or whatever it was.
It finished then when it came to restarting windows it came up with the following message...

WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE OF AN ERROR IN THE SOFTWARE.
PLEASE REPORT THE PROBLEM AS:
load needed DLLs for kernel.
PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SUPPORT PERSON TO REPORT THIS PROBLEM

Ive borrowed a copy of windows XP Home Edition but its not doing anything, it keeps going to the above error message.
I've been left with the laptop to sort out (its out of warranty by a few weeks)
I have the recovery CD, the Notebook drivers on CD, XP Home edition CD and Service Pack1 on CD.

None of the CD's are doing anything now, any ideas what to do next?
I'd like to get it sorted cos the owners are good friends, and he's a very good plumber/gas fitter(very handy cos I'm renovating a couple of houses at the mo')

Any advice welcome.

try going to Bootdisk.com and get a get of XP floppies might work ?????
