It's that time of year again (here in the UK) when all the big hairy spiders seem to appear all over the house.

Must be the colder nights... You find one, capture it in a glass, and hurl it outside... only to find the bugger in your sink again later the same week.

So, I'm going to collect them in some sort of Battle Arena container, where I can watch them cannibalise each other to my heart's content.

Plus, by not throwing them outside, they won't keep coming back in, and giving me heart failure when I find one on the towel that I'm using to dry my face on...

The main problem is the container... Any suggestions? I'm thinking along the lines of an old fish tank - then I can film the Gladiators in action through the glass. A web cam perhaps? ;)

I dread the Autumn outcrop of spiders too, tho it's very wussy. I can't do the capture approach tho, and tend to go for massacre instead. I suggest you keep them in the bath, as that's where they all end up anyway!

We had a 'pet' spider that we called Steve. While he was around, we saw no little spiders. Anyway, one night, Steve overstepped his mark by coming into the living room and we had to deal with him :( Anyway, we became pretty much over run with the disgusting things after that. Don't know what's worse, one big mutha or a load of little ones?! Anyway, i never 'save' them. They get squished!

Although i have aserious phobia of them i cannot stand them being killed, and have to shout many times at the poor bugger i make chuck it out of the window, and whatever glass they use i cannot use that same glass for weeks lol.
Had a few bad experiences which resulted in a very close early death of me by heart failure and breating difficulties.

Was about 10am in my ovely Swansea apartment last year, was dying for the toilet, got up went in the bathroom, went to sit down and "ARRGGHHHHHH!!" i never move so fast in my life, from crouching over the toilet to sitting on my bed gasping for breat as i try to calm my heart down. The biggest spider i've ever been near to in my life! one of them Harvestmen thingy ones, yyuueeergggh.... almost touching my knee it was. Grabbed nearest towel shooved it under the closed door, went out of the bedroom into the hall and shooved Nicks jumper under that closed door lol, then sat in the longe ALL DAY!! till 6pm waiting for Nick to get home t remove the bugger, was bursting from 10am till 6pm! The pain! :( the things i go through with my phobia.

I remember that one.

Met its maker up the hoover if memory serves.

Was funny though to come home to find all the doors stuffed with clothes.

This one had to be shaken into the glass to get all its legs in, and not be left trapped on the wall. Threw it out the front door, then cautiously (and rather cowardly) checked that it'd actually left the glass..

And this is the fella I found in my kitchen sink yesterday. The bugger jumped too, when I removed the plug to wash him away. Took about 2 mins, of chasing him round the sink, and getting him in the right position (i.e. in the plug-hole) to blast him down with the contents of a jug of water.

Had to check outside in the drain too - to make sure he'd left the building!! :eek:

I recall the momentous Spider and the Wasp battle - A spider who lived in the wall of our classroom. During the summer we used to knock flies into its web and watch him come out and have thenm for his lunch.
However once we had gained his confidence, the spider came out merrily one day to find an angry wasp had been delivered to him for lunch. A fine battle ensued resulting in the death of both parties.
Beats bloody chess, and gambling on the dogs!

I like spiders. They sit around in corners quietly and don't bother anyone.

And they EAT FLIES. I HATE FLIES!!! They make annoying buzzing noises.

The problem I think is that of course it's just a 2d picture..

Imagine a glove.. well thats what you are seeing there - it's basically a glove that fitted over the spider, so the segmented bits you see are actually the holes that the spiders "new" legs came out of.

When a tarantula moults it lays on it's back and pushes the old skin off - imagine an old pair of "skin tight" jeans - some people had to lay on their backs to pull them on and off - well, thats just the same :D

and of course there are also some "bits missing" - ie the "cover" for the bit you see there, and the skin from the abdomen (round bit hat goes at the back) which splits during the moult.

Euch! Euch! Euch! That's not nice! Sorry for being thick. Just didn't quite grasp the concept of the whole thing!!

Buzz- got any pics of the actual spider? e.g. on your hand so we can gauge how big it is?

And, do you give it freedom of your house, so it can wander around where it pleases?

Mind you there was one time i was in a panic when i saw a dark blob on the floor of my bedroom, and as my light was out and only the light of the landing shone through it very much resembled a spider... much to the embaressment of myself as my dad slowly came in my room with a glass.... it was a clump of my hair /hangs head/

Oh reminds me!! Round at my mums house they have a spider that lives in the outside cupboard, which is now famous. My sis puts a stick near its home, it dives out, grabs the stick starts biting it and pulling at it (quite strong for a spider) erally vicsious it is! But it also eats the cat food! We put a chunk of cat food inside its cupboard for it and you can see it grabbing it and carrying it off, then it starts to tear at it and munch at it!
I tell ya i doubt its an English spider, we filmed it lol, yuueerrgghh its horrible. I'm expecting to see our cats cacooned in a web inside the cupboard oneday, only hearing a muffled "meewww, mewwww"
