All,
Just about to do some red bulbs to replace the drivers side reversing light (for a fog light) and wondered if anyone else considered doing this before, or has pictures ? Should be easy enough to rewire the connections. Cheers Phill PS Would anyone be interested in having a bulb supplied ? |
If you paint the bulbs red i think you will find that the are not very bright and intense like a fog light Revolution sell red led cluster bulb direct fit about £9 i have one fitted , it is bright like fog lamp .

Did this recently fitting some afterburners to MY98 UK Turbo. Came as standard with TWO reversing lights. So i swapped one for a fog light. Wiring pic below...

cheers steve |
I am looking at doing this mod also!!
Can anyone give me a URL or tel num for whoever sells these red bulbs. Cheers, Beef |
I have fitted Sti rears to my wagon.....rare eh....and had the same problem of the two reversing lights......no problem really!!!
I got an LED red bulb from Revolution in Gateshead and it does the job quite admirably. http://www.revolution.eu.com/ As for cutting and twisting the wires together......Noooooooo!!!!! Remove the small screw that holds the socket into the back of the drivers side lamp cluster, use a very small screwdriver to "unlatch" the plastic clip thingy (in the socket) from the positive feed to the reversing light and re-insert the female connector into the space which corresponds with the fog light positive wire on the car. (I'm assuming a UK car here!) Don't worry about the negative, as they are linked. Doing this means no cutting of wires and no spare bulb holder from your UK lamps, dangling about behind the light!! Simple!!! Marty PS: I also fitted LED indicator bulbs, but the car didn't like them......acted like a bulb was blown and flashed twice as fast as it should. Worked ok with the hazard switch though!!! Fitted Philips Silver Vision and all is fine!! edited to add the PS:....oh...and the www address!! Call me stupid, but isn't it just easier to use the UK harness
with the STI lights and fit a red bulb into the fog light socket? This would require no wiring changes. |
Stupid ;)
Well you did ask :D |
STi lights dont have a fog light socket.
|
Funny!
But they have a reversing light socket which the original fog light lamp (albeit with a red bulb) can be fitted into. This seems straightforward to me. |
These were the instructions I was given to fit mine :)
Fitting of Jap. Spec. rear clusters Both clusters have their own section of wiring loom with 3 x bulb holders thereon. (1. reverse light, 2. indicator, and 3. tail/brake light) The passenger side cluster is a a straight swap for the o.e. unit. The drivers side cluster requires slight modification, using part of the Jap loom section and part of the o.e. loom section. 1. On the drivers side Jap. cluster you will see the indicator wires have been chopped and taped. Remove the tape and seperate the indicator holder/orange bulb from the rest of the loom section. (this is secured by a small phillips screw) 2. Disregard the remainder of the jap. loom, keep the orange bulb/bulb holder handy. 3. The o.e. loom in your UK spec cluster will have 4 x bulb holders. (1. reverse light, 2. indicator, 3. tail/brake light, and 4. fog light) You need to use this loom (UK spec) in your Jap spec cluster adapted with the part from step 2.. 4. Next, take the UK loom, and chop the indicator wires, and dispose of the bulb holder/bulb. Keep the remainder of the loom (with 3 bulb holders now) as this is going to be joined to the Jap. bulb holder/orange bulb that you kept from step 2. 5. Now join your Jap. Indicator holder/orange bulb to the UK loom, making it back up to 4 x bulb holders. The reason for this modification is that the orange bulb does not fit into the UK bulb holder as this is designed to hold clear bulbs. For the orange bulb to fit, the entire holder must be added to UK loom. 6. Plug the tail/stop lamp and indicator lamp back into the cluster. 7. Plug the fog light into the reverse light socket on the cluster, making sure you replace the bulb with a high power red one, or alternatively, paint it red. 8. This makes your reverse light bulb/holder redundant, as there are only 3 sockets on the cluster and you have 4 bulb holders, so tape it out of the way somewhere. 9. You should now have 1 reverse light on the passenger side. (this is all that is legally required) On the drivers side your fog light will illuminate in the reverse light lens. 10. As easy as that! |
