I posted about this problem some time ago. Several folk said they had this problem with their STI8's raer suspension clonking. Has their been aresolution to this problem?

Mainland told me today when I asked that they had not had a problem with any 8's rear suspension, only a rear screen that was loose!

JohnD 17 September 2003 07:41 PM

I have noticed noise from the rear suspension on occasions. Certain bumps or imperfections produce a metallic sound, other times it's fine! I'm going to fit the Prodrive springs myself within a couple of weeks so will check security of all connections, joints, bushes etc.

No problems with mine

STI VIII 19 September 2003 02:45 PM

I've got the problem too:-(

When I take it to service in a few weeks I demand they solve it!!

The dealer said it was the bushings of the rear stabiliser:-(

Damn does a dealer know nothing or are they just playing stupid??
I got a light ticking sound from the rear in the interior as well, does anybody knows what this could be??

Greetings from Holland.

I took my 8 in for a 10,000 service (and new clutch!)and for them to try and solve the problem. Apparently there are some shims avaialble to sort it. But they forgot to order thgem so the knocking stays unsolved.

Having removed the rear seat to get at the strut mounts when fitting the Prodrive springs, it's amazing what noises you can hear that you did'nt hear before! Going over some bumps I heard some clonks and then realised it was the seat belt buckles bouncing on the floor where the seat squab should be! I did hear a clonk that sounded like the boot lid bouncing in its lock?
Andy - can you get a bit more info re- the shims, where they go etc? What are you doing with a new clutch at 10k?

No idea why it should need a new clutch. I've never done a clutch in 30 years of driving and 20 years of rallying and racing.

Poor do really. I'm not happy.

loads of knocking.

but i'm starting to think it might be exhaust or a combo of the both.

going in on monday. i'll let you know what they say.

mwp 08 October 2003 11:50 AM

i was sure it was rear suspension. but no ... exhaust and heatshields.

This is an old, old chestnut first manifested on STi 7, and there are dozens of pages on SN about it. Usually its the suspension, tho' there can be other causes. There is a fix which works for some, but not all, vehicles (my STi 7 has been 'fixed' 5 times, including at IM West Bromwich and still clunks :(:(:(:(), and your dealer should be well familiar with the issue. STi 8 seems to have been less affected - not that that's any comfort to those who have got the rattle!!

Use the Search engine on this board if you want the gory detail.....

Ive got the clunk, too. Rear left, sounds like a loose spare wheel/jack but they're tight as can be. Should all dealers know about this & the shims?

Phil Harrison 11 October 2003 05:13 PM

yes, they should

STI VIII, Had a light ticking noise in the back of my STi8 as well. Discovered it last night. Noise is coming from the end of the zip tucked in the hole around the back of the drivers seat. Just try tapping the top of your seat around and you'll hear it, passenger side does it as well but the one right behind your ears is the irritating one. I just pushed a couple of bits of sponge in the hole with a short screwdriver or drill, difficult to get it in the right spot and mine still rattles a bit so I'm going to stuff it some more tonight.

On the NSR rattle I can report mine was a problem before the Prodrive springs but definitely quieter since to the point where I can ignore it and just have fun driving the car. If we all spend our time listening to the rattles then we are responsible for spoiling our own fun. (leave that to our government, they're the experts).

Had the rear strut changed under warranty for that damm knocking noise, its always the nearside rear one, also had a part of the exhaust changed as it was baning of the rear diff.

JohnD 17 November 2003 10:27 PM

Mine seems better since I fitted the Prodrive springs, but then again I also adjusted the boot lid lock as well to stop the lid from bouncing minutely when going over bumps and potholes! Worth checking guys!!

John, you ask why have I had a new clutch 10,000 miles.

Well I'm a bit mystified really.

I've had 3 Cosworths, a Quattro, 2 TT's,a classic scooby and competed up to International level in rallying over the years. I have NEVER done a clutch in my life.

Whats more worrying is the new one (nearly 1000 miles!) has started to judder from cold. Also, I get a lot of clutch smell in traffic. For instance I did a 3 point turn the other day and it smelt like I had been holding the car on a hill with about 7000 rpm.

And before somebody asks, no, i'm not riding the clutch. As far as I'm concerned the clutch should be as near as possible an on/off switch.

Apparently the shims are readily available from stock.

"They all do that, sir!"

Had 3 Scoobs all of whose clutches stank when using reverse gear against any kind of slope or other rsistance!

Faaaaantaaastic.

Anyway, seing as how my house was burgled last week to get the keys,(see seperate thread) I have decided to flog it.

I pick up a new Elise 111s on Thurday. I hope the twats nick it to use as a ram raider. That'll sort em out.

0-60 in 5.1 secs, 40mpg+ on a run, mother in law can't get in it, could be the answer. Watch this space.

(Ducks down to hide from the narrow mided flack!!!)
