Having a look at one tonight, up for £700, whats the main things to look for???

AFAIK- if it's burning oil/blue smoke under any circumstances forget it.

Other than that they don't seem to rust and other than seat bolster wear are fairly long lasting.

What does the blue smoke mean???? Piston rings gone??

seats will be coming out within a couple of days anyway ;-)

Siezed rear brake callipers (hand brake mechanism that is)

Rust in the tail gate area , above the rear windows and at the base of the B pillar near the door shuts.

oh yes and the obvious stuff like accident damage etc.

Isn't the slam panel at the front (above radiator, where bonnet clip is) supposed to be primer grey from the factory?

If it's some other colour, then it's been damaged repaired.

This is good stuff thank you i will let this run and then before I go at 4.15 print these off and have a look at the car.

I dont expect it to be perfect thats for sure..... just strong I think....

check the axle bearings too they are all getting old now


stand behind the car and look at the back wheels they should not be canted in at top if they are the axle is probably passed it

they can also rust behind the headlight where you cant really see it not a major problem if its still all there

A fifth alloy wheel - a lot get nicked with it being kept under the car.

Find out when cmbelt was last done - pugs are quite rare cos the belt only needs changing after every 100K (yes - thats 100K).

Tappets are usually quite noisy.

E/F/G reg cars will run on any petrol you fancy, but its best to put 4* in on every 4th tank.

Rust on wheel arches - also look for lacquer peeling.

Mine used to eat handbrake cables, also check the brake pipes on the rear.

If you get it, make sure you damp-proof the ignition system well, mine was absolute tw@t until it got warmed up.

Good thing about pugs is that they have a quite distinct sound, like a scoob does. (not that a pug sounds like a scoob I mean.)

What about the engines themselves ...... Are they strong? My mate a mechanic reckons they are much better than the 1.6 and the only real thing other than the dreaded smokers is that the induction / air pipes crush in on themselves causing bother

went to look at one pug a few years ago and it had fuel sitting in pools around the spark plugs.

if looking at the engine, the normal stuff applies like water in the oil etc.

If I remember rightly they're more likely to need radiators replaced more often than cam belts - so check that.

It was always popular with 205 1.9's to stick the 1.6's gearbox in it (?) although not sure how you'd tell the difference.

heater controls can be a bit temperamental too - doesnt take much for them bugger up.

one thing that the haynes manual is wrong about - the manual says that to replace the heater motor, you basically have to take the dashboard out to get at it. Wrong! just pull the carpet out from above the passengers feet (on a 309 anyway)

heater motors are crap but they are easy to change 10 minutes if you have done it before

I've got a 1.9 and a 1.6, brother rallies a 1.6.

The bit about lacquer peeling is correct, and you tend to find the paint cracks at the top of the door shuts.

There are some cheap ones about - I paid £95 for my 1.9 as a non-runner (plug leads 3 and 4 were on the wrong way round and battery was flat :D ), and it's been more reliable than my cossie (although that's probably the most obvious comment I've ever made!)

Had a 1.9 for ten years. Cambelt 42k, some used to do it 38k, others upto 48k miles. Oil cooler could get blocked, giving smokey exhaust. Watch for 1.6 cars disguised as 1.9s. Oil filler cap usually gunged up with cream cheese, caused by bad breathing (pipes getting blocked).

Blue smoke could either be valve stem seals (£250) or piston rings (much more).

I've just bought an Mi16 off here that smokes like mad, but not too arsed. Will just get a new engine, as fairly sure its rings rather than stem seals.

Hunting idle, and struggling to tick over when cold

IIRC, this is down to the supplementary air device :)

Its the AFM that affects idling. A quick clean with brasso and adjust the idle screw slightly and it will be cured.

Mine also had a problem with the rear beam bearings
and seizing rear calipers (on numerous occasions)...
but i they've been mentioned...

after all that i would just add 205s are brill :D

Problems on 205 ? ho ho ho We've had our fair share. None of the usual stuff though. Web site is out of date by a couple of months. I've loads to add including the latest failure of the clutch pressure plate which shattered at 7600 rpm last weekend.

Amazed that the clutch cover held the parts in place otherwise I'd have lost my legs !!!

Went out lunchtime and bought myself an original Guttman 205 GTi 1.9........Dealer supplied in the UK ..... got every MOT, reciept from new including bill of sale. 3 Owners, 100K miles, full leather interior (soon to be removed) lowered on Konis from new, smart un-curbed wheels, sports exhaust from new, all the original spoilers, twin head light conversion, super chip, hairy cam .......oh and it drives really well. Just gotta insure it now.

Is there a 205 forum like this? If so what is it???

Mine has full leather - actually very nice for leather seats, none-slidy :D:D

No i didnt get the guttman for that price .....payed a bit more than that ..... When i say its a guttman my local dealer did 5 of them from new when they came out ..... Had a look at the bill of sale and it was around £3,000 of extras and thats 13 years ok.....

no piccys yet, gotta get her home and polish the life out of it ........ then the seats and carpet come out and the roll cage etc goes in
