Coming home the other day when I pulled up behind a Golf TDi. Noticed that it had big wheels but just assumed they were after market ones (looked like RS4 18" wheels). Anyway it was p1ssing down with rain but this car took off like a rocket! Caught me off guard but I put my foot down (mines an STi) and caught up after a few roundabouts. He couldn't lose me then but was still pretty fast considering the weather.

A TDi could not go so quick so (after he had turned off) I thought that it may have been an R32 with a TDi badge! I missed the tail pipes as I know that R32's have two. Anyone heard of such an option on the R32's (he could have changed it himself of course)?

I don't believe for a minute that any R32 owner would do that.
The Golf GTTDi PD150 is a very useful piece of kit. :D

I believe that the Golf GTTDi 150, with a Superchip can produce over 300lbs/ft of torque at 3000rpm.

Not to be sniffed at, and much more than a Scooby, although it doesn;t have the legs in each gear that we do! ;)

Why? because it's a diesel? (sorry if that's not what you meant).

Diesel technology has advanced significantly over the last few years.

For example, the Audi A4 1.9 diesel has the same 0-60 as their 2.0 petrol version.

As I've been told many times by the diesel mob the in gear performance of new generation TDi's when remapped is very, very good. 200bhp and god knows how much torque is pretty impressive.

If he was in front of you he was obviously nailing the throttle first. Next time don't underestimate them, try a bit harder and get past them- they often think they are the fastest thing on the road. They need re-educating!

I quite often get the chance to do side by side standing starts over here on the Autoroute with these new TDi's- they are pretty slow in those circumstances.

....How many mpg do these Golf TDi's do?

We have a 115 bhp TDi and the low down torque is amazing. I used to get in it after the 22b and the EVO and it pulls straight away whereas the other 2 cars took as while to get up to boost. Obviously the golf runs out of oomph well before the 2 others but initially it pulls like a train.

My new 140bhp A3 does abut 45mph with about 500-600 miles to a tank of the horrible sticky smelly stuff. This is about double what my old scooby gave me.

mates got a 150tdi - it can really shift, picks up really well from low revs.

volkswagon used to advertise them as being able to go 890 miles between fill ups - although my mate who is as tight as they come has only managed 620 at best.

I tagged onto the back of one of these at about 50mph going up quite a steep hill, although he caught me off guard a bit i was massively impressed and quite embarrassed when i just managed to overtake it before the road went into single lane :eek:

I used to have a 150pd before I jumped to my scoob, what a jump it was!!

These are great cars they have huge amounts of torque and have great fuel economy. I got 65mpg and 650 miles on a full tank.

Now can you imagine if the VW V10 (320bhp) diesel get put into the New Golf, it is a rumour!

Used to have a new leguna 1.9Dci(140bhp). They pull but loose legs to any other petrol car when it really matters..had 600miles a tank at 90+ on motorways but its about as inspiring as a limp sherbert dip in the rain when it comes to driver enjoyment, thus the move to Accord Type-S for current car on week-days...

You can keep your Dci's and your Dti's and your Tdi and i'll stick to my smiles when the vtec kicks in while overtaking the diesel cars on the wee-days or on week-ends when the winding turbo sits me back in my seat...

It was raining very hard! TDi is front wheel drive but R32 4 wheel drive. The Golf took off on a r/bout first and then a straight (didn't mention that before - sorry). I can't believe that 2 wheel drive wouldn't have just spun the wheels especially in the rain? I know that TDi's can be chipped etc and become pretty fast but they still only do 4k max revs(ish) so surely an STi would blitz them after their initial advantage (little turbo lag in Tdi).

R32 has 240bhp as standard so would probably put up a pretty good fight! If it was an R32 then I agree that I would want people to know rather than badge it is something less.
