Good car, very solid and reliable, other people seem to have had problems with the coil but mine was fine and very cheap to run. Excellent on the motorway as sat at 80 nicely with plenty of reserve. Would swap my WRX back for one!!

Yep, I`m with Tuffer, always got around 33-35mpg. Not as bad as people on here will have you believe either.

I came from a MY99 scoob to a 98S Golf Turbo.

I hated it. It rattled, doors squeaked and were way too heavy for the mountings. Rolled quite a lot. The seats looked nice, but compared to the scoob seats they were uncomfortable.

On the plus side it was very economical and I didn't care about leaving it anywhere.

Interior quality fantastic and the Recaros that were on the car then were superb

Overtaking splurge was its best feature

handling is on the soggy side (decent tyres help enormously)

very,very nice car to live with daily

good stereo

very reliable

Loved mine to bits, always seemed to ease you on to go that bit faster for some reason - sat nicely at 110mph IMO :D
Much better than reviews give credit it for, comfy, reliable, well made racked my miles with easy (25k in 11 months) :)

Well, took out a nice 2001 car tonight and was impressed with the interior - only 15k on the clock, but it was like a new car - and the Recaro's were a bonus. Not Impreza turbo fast, but enough for my current day to day needs.....and need to be fadster than the Gf's Puma;)

my octavia vrs which has the same engine except 30bhp more powerful does on average 35mpg, on motorways 40-45mph without thrashing it.

I have an X reg V6 4motion - similar to the GTi in many ways. These cars are great for city workhorses and motorway miles, just don't get interested in the twisties as the chassis is not comparable to a scoob. I think the Gti has 180ps - only slightly less than my V6 which is plenty grunty enough for most situations.

Build quality seems to vary - silly things like plastic clamps that break within the door which means the window falls out. Coil packs can be an issue too (although that seems to be affecting everthing from TTs to Seats - all based on the same kit).

All in all, safe practical cars with reasonable economy and performance.

My girlfirend has one, a 5 door since we're expecting our first child in December :)

Sitting in traffic or cruising on the motorway its a very nice place to be. The quality of interior is great, as are the Recaro seats. The gearing is quite tall, sometimes you can be caught out if going round a tight 90deg corner in 2nd, but the upside of that is 30 - 35mpg @85mph.

gets you round the corners OK if pushing it, however don't expect an abundace of communication through the steering wheel nor expect it to be a nimble hot hatch - its too heavy!

We debated the V5 or the 1.8T GTI, we went for the GTI for 2 main reasons: its rare to find a V5 with the sports handling pack (the nose heavy engine is very wallowy without it) and commands a premium, also the 150BHP 1.8T can be upped to 200BHP for little money which she'll do once the warranty runs out next year.

Solid good cars IMO, personally I'd have gone for an Octavia RS but she wanted a Golf :)

i owned one for 4 years before getting an Evo6. The Golf was unreliable, slow and handled like a tank!

i only ever got an average of 26MPG

Theres always a bad story about any car...

mine has over 100,000 miles on it - i've had it for 3 years and it hasn't missed a beat - was chipped for a year - then had a slightly bigger turbo K04 - now has an IHI - 321 bhp still hasn't missed a beat

advice to anybody getting one - chip it and change the shocks and add a neuspeed rear anti roll bar at a minimum - you will have a car that is completely tranformed from a 150 bhp 1.8T

IsS yours the ihi turbo from jabbasport? what mods are involved and how much is the full price of the conversation?

Also if i get it remapped beforehand, when i get the conversion will it need remapping again?

I am currently trying to sell my Mk3 16v Golf in order to get a Mk4 GTI. I wanted the 1.8T but I am selling mine to save some money on insurance and so am going to test drive the 1.8 20v non turbo.

Yes, I know it will be dog slow, but it's only grp 10 insuance (1.8T is 14)... it'll have the solid interior I am looking for and I know it'll only be for a year or so until the salary in my next job picks up a bit and I can afford something with a bit mor ooompf!! :D

i can easily get 30-35mpg when i'm tanking it. i average 40+ wihout trying. would recommend one of these to anyone. more torque than you can shake a stick at ;) they look awesome as well...even though mine has all the extra's ;)

only prob so far was the cd multichanger but was changed no probs by VW
