cheers in advance ciaran |
Fast Classic.
im 17, have a GT6 (2ltr 6cyl you know) tis fast. |
next! seriosly though want a runabout just now then going to buy something better when i get a pay rise!
|
What about something like a Peugeot 306 S16 or a 205 GTI then?
|
whats the difference between an S16 and a gti-6? well was wondering would it be worth buying an oldish sport and adding a few mods?
|
How about a Puma? Not blistering but fairly fast and excellent handling. I had one before my WRX and wish I still had it as a second car.
Steve |
Ditto what Steve said :D My missus still has my old one and it's a right laugh at sensible speeds. Handles very well and is sooooo chuckable :)
|
Pug s16 has 155bhp 5 gears
Pug gti6 has 167bhp and 6 gears and is a lot quicker! id deff advise against the s16, as you would be disapointed, my mate has one and he is |
The GTi-6 and S16 are very different. The engines are different as well. The S16 has a version of the old Mi16 engine but the GTi-6 was different. The suspension setup is different too much better on the "6" and most mags said this too. GTi-6 has more power and a better specification and renouned as one of the best hot hatches of the late 90's.
|
The S16 was never as quick as it's quoted power suggested it should be, usually only managing 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds and smomething like 24 to 100... The GTI-6 was though and as everyone has said is a much better car all round.

want something fast |
200sx?
0nly group 18... astraboy. |
If you have the space for 2 cars I would do the following:
S**T cheap every day runabout fiesta or something and spend the rest of the money on a decent kit car such as a westfield or something...stupidly fast, dirt cheap to run/insure...hardly any depreciation, and the biz to drive. £5k will get you a very good 1700xflow example...which only cost me £180 a year to insure and was something to look forward to on a night after work or as a weekend blast...sold it now :( ...only one garage and that space is taken. worth a thought? |
group 18 astraboy u mad i can hardly insure group 16!! plus lack of driving experince+rear wheel drive= death or much discomfort!
|
rear wheel drive= death, no you got it all wrong, front wheel drive =death. when you under steer into the on coming car.
Si |
uv not seen me drive any power means death!
|
ok how about Hyundai Coupe 2.0 SE, 1999, Group 12.
|
I'd get an MR2 Turbo - Only cos i'm getting one Tomorrow
|
 Sensible suggestions then.
Come on guys, this is a serious post, be realistic and think of some reasonable cars, reasonable insurance and running costs etc........ |
thankyou jawa remeber 20 years on this earth and 0 no claims but i would still be willing to pay a couple of thousand for insurance. plus want a front or 4 wheel drive car only!
|
Mine was a serious suggestion...one of the fastest cars you can get for under £5k...and sooooo cheap to run/own
Just need to have a cheaper every day car as well, which is the down side. |
Why not get a scoob GL - 1.8 or 2L. Ain't that fast, but it'll do the job until you can afford something faster.
Insurance isn't too bad (11-13), & you could pick one up for £2k ish or a bit more, depending on what you want. |
Since when were Westfields cheap to insure anyway? A tad impractical as well :)
|
ALL IMHO...
Since when was £180 a year (fully comp) a lot of money to insure a car with that type of performance? (That price was for me when I was 24/25 years old a couple of years ago) VERY cheap I think. Also a lot of Westies are tax exempt and all servicing can be done yourself on the old XFLOW westfields...at hardly any money. I also sold my westfield after 2 years of trouble free fun for £2k more than I bought it for...depreciation does not really affect these cars. If you want a fast fun car, the the Westie is about as good as you can get for around £5k....its a racing car. If you read my post you will see that I have adressed the practicallity issue... The down side is the fact that you have to have a second car for the practical shopping, picking up the kids, etc. But a £1k fiesta or something could more that meet those requirements leaving you £5k for the Westie... Again, it was a serious suggestion. I did the above for 2 years and had a clio as my every day car and the westfield was a weekend/after work toy, and every day car in summer. Great experience. The only reason I sold the westfield is because my new car has to live in the garage. |
If you went the Westie route, i have a G reg 205 XS which you can have as a daily driver for £450 :)
|
Okay, how about a Rover Tomcat Coupe VVC?
Looks great, sub 8 sec 0-60, and reliable if you get a well maintained example! If insurance is still a problem go for the 1.6 - still looks the part and still less than 10 to 60... Or an MX-5 / Eunos Roadster - as long as you avoid the mid-90s 1.6, very asthmatic, earlier ones are quicker. Feels faster than it is cos your bum's on the road... Only problem with 2 cars are 2 lots of insurance, tax, servicing, and you need the space (otherwise I would have gone that route a while back!) [Edited by NiceCupOfTea - 9/16/2003 2:36:30 PM] |
If you really have to spend all your money then a 106 GTI could be an answer.
however, you've already said that you want something better later on so why don't you save for that and buy something cheaper (but still fun) to chuck around? Something that handles well will be much more fun to drive than something that has a few extra BHP but is a dog round the corners. A decent 106 XSi or even a zetec Fiesta can be had for a lot less than 6k and will be cheaper to insure than 6k's worth of GTI or VTS or whatever. Just a thought :) |
How about my Golf GTI 16v? It's in the for sale section on here...
Koni adjustables, uprated brakes and a Miltek exhaust are the only mods. 65k miles, FSH. £3950. |
Oh, and I'm just up the road in Aberdeen ;)
|
Puma 1.7, grp 12/13 ins, cheap to run good performance and outstanding handling for FWD. Had one, really rate it.
or Honda Civic 1.6 or 1.8 VTI, fast, handle well built to last bulletproof engines. Got one, really rate it |
