Please can someone roughly estimate what BHP my '93 WRX would be pushing, I know it would be best to get it done on a rolling road, but, I am sure someone with far superior knowledge of Impreza's would be able to tell me.

It's a GC8 '93 Impreza, with Blitz air induction kit, Blitz Nur Spec R backbox and a twin dump downpipe.

My MY93 with Scoobysport exhaust and HKS induction kit ran 249bhp @ 6175 213lbsft @ 5750 at Well Lane but boost wasn't holding very well and my coil packs were knackered. The car was running on Optimax.

93 saloon WRX's are 240PS on 100RON fuel as standard. Which is probably around 230BHP on UK SUL. Seeing as you've freed up the breathing a bit I'd guestimate 240 - 245 BHP depending on the weather :)

What sort of BHP are you expecting ?
Alot of people think all WRX's are 280bhp as standard and by throwing an exhaust at them they expect 300bhp + ...but alas its not as simple as that :)
As Jay m A said your car is 240ps as standard running on Jap 100ron fuel, Id say that by adding the bits onto it you have you will get about 240 to 250 depending on the rolling road and thats if your running it on SUL and octain booster.........you are running it on SUL and octain booster arent you ??

Cheers for the replies, interesting to say the least, I did look up the engine code and realised it was 240bhp standard, I was kinds hoping for around 270, looks like I was fed some bull when buying the car :( eg adding the exhaust would give another 10%bhp, up to 5% extra with the air induction and another 5% for the downpipe.
I am quite vague with Impreza's so please bear with me, build you a computer in an hour, but anything to do with cars, I have to rely on you good people that know what they're talking about :)
My WRX has been in the country 6 years and was up till 3 weeks ago still restricted to 112mph and has been run on Optimax all of the time!
Is Octane booster still required even though I use Shell Optimax?

There are differing opinions on this one. I have an MY95 WRX and have had it for 3 1/2 years. I have always run on SUL and then Optimax since it's release and never used octane booster. My other half has an STI4 which he's had for 5 years and he's used the same - only adding octane booster for the track days he's done and neither of us have had any problems <searches for wood to touch>.

With regard to BHP, mine should be 240 but had it rolling road tested last year at SAS and it came out at 261 - (no mods) however, on closer inspection the ECU is a different one and not the std one and this was all done in Japan before it came into the country, so who know's what's been done to your car. The only accurate way to tell the bhp is to get it RR tested.

I think your right on the RR, I will have to get down to Gillingham at Autotechnics and see what it is actually pushing, like you say, what might have been done to it while it was in Japan, nobody knows :)

As for the Optimax solution, it is the closest to 100 ron we have so I'll carry on with it, I won't put in SUL under any circumstances.

MY95WRX should be 260PS standard, not 240. Although that is on 100 RON.

Yes, to be safe. As the others have said, your car is mapped to run on Japanese market 100RON fuel. Optimax is often 97.something.

The only circumstances under which you can skip the booster (with confidence) are either if your car's been remapped for UK fuel, or if you have a KnockLink fitted. At least with one of those on you'll know if your car dets and drive accordingly (or start using booster!), rather than carry on in blissful ignorance until your engine sh*ts itself.

On an import I'm inclined to agree. Booster is not ESSENTIAL but it's wise.

And even using booster it's not always 100% safe.

You can get bad batches of fuel. Oil companies use differing blends of fuel at different times of year. Bad batches also do occur. Also there are the usual horror stories of numptie tanker drivers putting the wrong fuel in the station tanks and only realising after several hundred gallons !!

For example, I filled up with Optimax and 100ml NF (as always) the other week. Knocklink went bananas, car was knocking its nuts off.
Fair enough I run 1.6 bar, but normally it's fine. I wound down the boost to safe levels and when refilled from empty with the same fuel and booster this time from a different garage, everything was fine again.

There's a huge thread about this on 22b.com re John Felstead's car which blew an engine following suspected dodgy fillup with Optimax and booster after being expertly mapped only a week or so previous on that exact fuel and booster mixture. It can happen.

The moral is.. Knocklink..worth it's weight in gold.

Mine is an M plate so in all honesty, I think it's a MY94 :D which I think makes it 240? Just trying to fool myself into believing it's a newer model ;)

Mine is a true MY95 then cos it's got the black seats with the grey panels! Well, at least I've learnt something about my car - only had it 3 1/2 years!! So, using Optimax and gaining 261bhp on the RR and no det, I'm quite pleased :)

Your lucky my car is exactly the same as yours however is has a blitz cat-back exhaust and induction kit, boost however was only showing 11-12psi on the rolling road and i made 261.5bhp and 237lbs-ft of torque..!!

Jo, this may sound silly but they made the MY95 in 94 aswell!

does your car have grey or red fleck on the seats???

grey= my95(260ps)
red fleck= my94(240ps)

Greasemonkey: I really don't know if the ecu has been remapped for Uk fuel, trouble with buying an import I suppose, when I bought the car from the local garage it stated the car was 280bhp, little did I know, at least it did have ABS as stated :)
I will start using OB and look into having a knocklink sensor fitted!

Rich: Know what you mean about bad fuel, I suppose that's why they say never to use Supermarket fuel, but as I say I will look into the knocklink sensor for sure, it's not nice living on a time bomb :(
